Andy Howell was the Wroxham hero as he netted against high-flying Bury on a cold Tuesday night at Trafford Park.
The Wroxham squad saw a few changes from Saturday's defeat at Witham. In came Michael Sommefield, Andy Howell, Matty Waters and Jordan King who replaced Nathan Stone, Jack Garrod, Seamus Kelleher and Jack Guyton.
The game started brightly for both teams, firstly good play between Bury Town's Remy Garrett and Alex Steed couldn’t find an end product in the opening exchanges of the game. The Yachtsmen then had a couple of chances within the first 15 minutes of the game, a ball over the top of the defence from David Hinton wasn’t able to find on running Jamie Forshaw and the ball ran along the wet grass onto the goalkeeper. Minutes later Jordan King's effort from the edge of the box went well over. Stephen Taylor then broke down the left hand side, but his curling cross was met by O’Sullivan in the Bury goal. A shot from Forshaw a few minutes later was comfortably saved by the Bury Town stopper again.
As the half was going on, Wroxham seemed to die down going forward, which led to Bury attacking them. First a menacing run by Bradley Barber was well cleared by Danny Rust, then an awkward bounce for Elliot Pride meant the Wroxham goalkeeper had to head the ball to safety. Mid-way through the first half Wroxham had to make a substitution after Michael Sommerfield was forced off and was replaced by Jack Guyton which meant Andy Howell dropped back into defence. Straight after the substitution some sublime skill from Noel Atkins left him in space on the edge of the box. The Bury player failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Around 30 minutes into the half, Bury had 3 chances in quick succession. A free kick from Barber was well saved by Elliot Pride, then a cross from Garrett was controlled by Barber on the edge of the edge of the area. He was brought down and managing to win a free kick in a promising position for the away side. Barber’s shot went well wide of the post without troubling Pride.
Wroxham then had another good spell of pressure, which saw Jamie Forshaw’s shot blocked on the edge of the area. A minute later, a fantastic run by Matty Waters was met by a glorious through ball which would have seen the speedy winger through on goal but he was ruled offside by the official. Back at the other end of the pitch, Bury had yet another chance wasted. This time a cross from Garrett only needed a touch from Barber, but somehow the forward didn’t manage to get there and the ball was cleared away but this only went as far as Garrett whose cross this time was met comfortably by the arms of Pride.
Matty Waters weaving run just before half time, saw the winger get brought down on the edge of the box to win a free kick in a promising position for the home side. The free kick from Forshaw was struck straight at the keeper who spilled out to Andy Howell. The skipper kept his calm and slotted the ball home to give Wroxham a 1-0 advantage going in at half time.
The second half saw Wroxham start very well, Matty Waters involved again. This time he was sending crosses into the box and also having a few good strikes blocked. With the numbers of Wroxham players attacking it allowed Bury to counter attack. Sam Reed’s run from deep into the final third saw him with no other options other than to shoot. His shot from the edge of the box was curled into the bottom right hand corner of the net to pull Bury back level 10 minutes into the second half.
Wroxham went on to have numerous good chances to score but failed to find the net with any of their chances. The best chance of the pick came when substitute Jordan Attree was given a through ball to be one-on-one against the keeper. The forward opted to use his left foot but failed to keep the ball on target. In the final stages of the game, a free kick from Elliot Pride on the half way line managed to bounce over O’Sullivan’s head on the edge of the box but scraped the outside of the post with what would have been an outrageous end to the game.
Taking Bury’s league position into consideration, it was a very well earned point.
