Yachtsmen go down against the Town

Yachtsmen go down against the Town

Adrian Gowling6 Sep 2015 - 17:35

Wroxham went down to defeat against Witham Town. This was Witham's first league win this season against a Wroxham side missing a number of key players

Wroxham came into the game against Witham with 3 changes from the side that started the 3-2 victory against Soham Town Rangers on Bank Holiday Monday. Michael Sommerfield, Andy Howell and Jordan King were all unavailable and replaced by Charlie Norman, Jack Guyton and Jamie Forshaw.

The home side started proceedings for the afternoon and started very well out of the blocks, a cross from George Cocklin down the left hand side narrowly missed everyone, and ran out for a goal kick. Then only a couple of minutes later, a through ball from Scott Kemp found Danny Emmanuel in space, who then cut back inside from the right, played a quick pass to Witham captain Lewis Godbold who hit the ball well over after a promising move. shortly after the little spell of pressure from the home team, the Yachtsmen started pressing. Jamie Forshaw played a fantastic ball between the two defenders, before Seamus Kelleher saw his shot well saved by the Witham goalkeeper Jason Baker.

Around 20 minutes into the game, after both teams having bright starts. David Hinton's run from deep for Wroxham resulted in a ball between the Witham centre-back pairing being exploited by Nathan Stone, whose tidy finish in the bottom right corner of the net was judged offside. Witham then started to push Wroxham back, Tyler Hayes' ball into the box but Cocklins header glanced it away from his teammate, but it was cleared comfortably by Charlie Norman. Danny Emmanuel received the ball to the right of the box, which then saw him use his skill to create space. The number 7 then played the ball across the edge of the box which was then pulled wide from Ryan Charles.

The first half was very much a scrappy affair, neither team getting a hold of the ball and few clear cut chances. But then a corner from John Watson found the head of Godbold whose powerful header smashed against the under side of the bar and came down onto Elliot Pride, it was then clearedoff the line by Wroxham's Stephen Taylor, however the referee's Assistant indicated a goal much to Wroxham's disgust.

Witham from then on in the half were in control of the game and pushing for a second goal. Emmanuel again showing good skill on the ball going down the right hand side. He then found space to cross but the final ball was poor. It fell to Watson who smashed a ball from 25 yards out which looked destined to go in the top right hand corner, but the acrobatics from Pride kept the score at 1-0. Charles then minutes later found space in the box, but his deflected shot was comfortable for Pride.

Wroxham made a break and Jack Garrod was twisting and turning in the Witham penalty area. Garrod went over under pressure from a defender but despite strong Wroxham appeals the referee and his assistant remained unmoved.

After the referee indicated their would be one minute of added time at the end of the first half, it seemed as though Witham were going to go in the dressing room much the happier side. But a freekick on the halfway line from Matt Halliday found Nathan Stone in the box whose header smashed against the crossbar, but a late challenge from Baker saw the referee award a penalty to Wroxham.Given that Pride received a red card for less on Monday, there were protests to the referee but no caution given to the Witham Goalkeeper. After a lengthy stop in proceedings whilst Stone received attention from both Physios, Jamie Forshaw stepped up and slotted the penalty underneath Baker and gave the Yachtsmen a goal which saw them comeback level from the last kick of the half.

Wroxham got the second half underway, a long ball from Taylor found Nathan Stone in space, but instead of shooting, Stone played the ball inside to Kelleher, whose shot was blocked, which then found Forshaw who's half volley went well wide of the post. Wroxham were starting positively after there poor first half display. However Emmanuel again was causing Wroxham problems, he ran from the halfway line you towards the corner flag on the left hand side but managed to cut inside past Norman. He pulled back the ball back across to Charles who placed the ball into the right of the net.

Wroxham then started to play the flowing football we have seen in recent performances. Stone was breaking down the right hand side but his cross was scrambled out for a corner.Direct from Kelleher's corner the ball appeared to have crossed the line but the referee's assistant on this occasion was not in the mood to award what appeared to be a legitimate goal.
A freekick later in the second half found the head of Halliday who headed it down on to the inside of the post, the ball then seemed to crawl across the goal line, before Stone miraculously smashing the ball over the bar from a yard out, which left everyone stunned. Minutes later a freekick on the halfway line from Elliot Pride nearly found the top corner of the goal, but forced a great save from Baker.

Wroxham then brought on two attacking minded players, Matty Watters and Jordan Attree replay Nathan Stone, who was feeling the effects of the penalty award in the first half and Seamus Kelleher. Despite this the final 10 minutes saw no real action, The Witham players seeing the game out by taking the ball into the corners.

Overall Wroxham were unlucky not to come out of the game with at least a point but the lack of a bite in midfield meant they left Essex without a point. They will be looking to gain revenge on Bury Town who they host on Tuesday night at Trafford Park, 7.45ko.
