Wroxham defeated by Supersub Reed

Wroxham defeated by Supersub Reed

Adrian Gowling25 Aug 2015 - 23:10

A looping header from substitute Sam Reed was enough to send the Yachtsmen to defeat.

A looping header from substitute Sam Reed was enough to send the Yachtsmen to defeat. Wroxham struggled to get into the game for the first hour and didn't really test the Bury Town keeper, Nick Punter.

Wroxham lined up with two changes to the starting XI that were victorious at Great Wakering. Andy Howell and Jack Guyton came in for Jamie Forshaw (injured) and Danny Rust (bench). And the first incident of note involved the returning Howell. Ollie Hughes wriggled away form Michael Sommerfield into the Yachtsmen area and the covering Howell clipped the attacker. The referee Paul Burnham immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Up stepped leading scorer Bradley Barber who hit his shot low to Elliot Pride's right but the keeper got down well to push the ball away and keep the scores level.

As the half progressed, Wroxham were unable to get any flowing moves together much to the credit of Bury Town. When they did get an opportunity in the 20th minute after a great flowing move involving Jordan KIng and Steve Holder, the latter's cross into the area was met by Nick Davey on the volley. Unfortunately, the defender was able to distract the forward and his shot squirmed away.

Bury were looking dangerous on the break and a shot by Hughes was blocked on the edge of the area by Andy Howell who was already on the lying on the floor when the shot came in. Wroxham were being penned back in their own half and the long throws of Darcy De'ath were being used as a method of attack by the Suffolk side. One of these caused confusion in the Wroxham defence as substitute Sam Reed had a shot blocked away for a corner . From the resulting kick a shot from distance caused trouble to Pride as it bounced just in front of the keeper. An unorthodox save using his face to block resulted in another corner kick to Bury.

The half ended with a rare Wroxham attack as David Hinton chipped the ball through to Nick Davey but his header on ran through to Nick Punter.

The second half began with Wroxham on the attack again in the first minute. After winning a corner, Steve Holder's ball into the area was just asking to be put into the back of the net but no-one in red was able to get their head to it.

The decisive moment of the match came in the 57th minute. The Wroxham defence failed to clear a corner and the ball was played back into the area where Sam Reed was able to head the ball beyond Pride and into the net. Not many people would disagree that the goal had looked likely as Bury had been pressing.

The goal then seemed to kick-start the Yachtsmen as they started to play their natural passing game. They began to have more possession of the ball as Bury were content to sit back and try to counter-attack on the break. Chances came but were spurned by two of Saturday's goal-heroes Nathan Stone and Nick Davey. A lovely move where he chipped the ball over the defender's head by substitute Seamus Kelleher allowed him to play a low cross into the penalty area. Unfortunately, the three Wroxham forwards had all over-run the cross and the ball was cleared.

Further chances fell to Stone, Davey and Jordan King but their shots were either too high or didn't cause the Bury substitute goalkeeper, Neil O'Sullivan too much trouble. The game finished with another Kelleher cross but Stone's header was just too high on this occasion to bring an end to a disappointing night for the Yachtsmen.

Manager Stewart Larter commented " the last 30 minutes, (we) played really well but I was disappointed we didn't really make the keeper work" "In that first hour, we were not as good as we have been. I was disappointed overall by tonight's performance".

Looking forward to Saturday and the visit of Fakenham Town to Trafford Park for the FA Cup Preliminary Round tie, Larter said: "It's a local derby and will be a tough game" "The financial reward from these games is vital to the club so I will be looking to get a win". " Not only is the financial reward important, but the tie in the next round will give the winners the chance to pit themselves against the highest non-league team in Norfolk" " I would relish the chance to play a club two levels higher than us as will Fakenham. I'm already looking forward to Saturday."

Elliott Pride, Michael Sommerfield, Steve Taylor, David Hinton, Andrew Howell, Matthew Halliday, Jack Guyton (Kelleher), Jordan King, Nick Davey, Nathan Stone, Steve Holder (Waters). Subs: Danny Rust, Matty Waters, Seamus Kelleher, Mac Gee.
