Davey the hero as Yachtsmen sink the Fleet

Adrian Gowling16 Aug 2015 - 12:42

Nick Davey's glancing header gave Wroxham the victory over The Fleet at a sunny Trafford Park.

Nick Davey’s glancing header gave the Yachtsmen their first win of the season in front of the home supporters.

David Hinton received the ball on the edge of the box from Jordan King, before delivering a teasing cross which saw Nick Davey pick up his first goal of the season, which was well deserved for Wroxham’s spectacular first half display.

With glorious sunshine beaming down on Trafford Park, Thurrock started off well, a shot from Charlie Stimson from 30 yards went well over the bar, then minutes later Joe Christou received the ball on the edge of the box, then forcing what was a comfortable save from Elliot Pride. Pride suffered from a nervous moment minutes later when a cross from Jordan Clark slipped through his fingers but fortunately the ball glanced off the crossbar and away. The shot from Thurrock woke Wroxham up, and suddenly the Yachtsmen were on top keeping Thurrock pinned back, not letting them out of their half. 20 minutes in Jack Garrod picked up the ball just inside the Thurrock half, then switching the ball to Steve Holder on the left hand side, Holder then played the ball back to Garrod who’s deflected shot on the edge of the box gives Rhys Madden in the Thurrock goal a bit of bother, but managed to palm it out for a corner.

Jack Garrod at the centre of play again, this time using his speed and agility to glide past Reece Morgan, then managing to find Nick Davey who’s shot couldn’t be kept down. Just over half way through the first half David Hinton played a fantastic ball through to Jordan King, who managed to pass to Steve Holder before being fouled, but the referee played a very good advantage, but Holder’s effort didn’t trouble Madden.

Injury time in the first half saw David Hinton find space to the left of the box, managing to play a tremendous teasing cross, which found Nick Davey, who’s glancing header found the back of the net to give the Yachtsmen a well-deserved lead.

The second half was a very different affair, neither team getting their grip on the game, but Wroxham always looking dangerous on the counter. With 20 minutes left, good passing between Jack Garrod and Jamie Forshaw, before the ball being played out to the on-running Holder, who’s shot scraped the outside of the post. The best chance of the second half for Wroxham went to Jordan King whose shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Madden. The game finished with Thurrock pressing the Wroxham backline but Michael Sommerfield and Matt Halliday stood tall in a fantastic rearguard action. Andy Howell was introduced late on as Manager Stu Larter ensured that Wroxham didn't concede any late equaliser.

Overall Wroxham’s fantastic first half performance paid off to get their first three points of the season, and no better way to get them than in front of their home support.

Stu Larter was really pleased with the spirit and determination shown by his players. "The team defended well after going 1-0 up and in reality Elliot Pride didn't have to make a save in the second period." "We have the same number of points as last season but have had a much harder start to the season this time around". "Hopefully, the positivity shown out on the pitch is visible to all especially as every player is working hard".
