Wroxham fall further behind

Wroxham fall further behind

Thomas Crabb15 Apr 2015 - 19:11

Wroxham were dealt a significant blow in their quest for the play-offs as James Fitchett’s 85th minute equaliser restricted them against Heybridge.

Stewart Larter rung the changes following The Yachtsmen’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Soham Town Rangers.

Midfielder David Hinton and centre back Matt Halliday both returned to action, with Ben Price moving to right back for the missing Stephen Taylor and top scorer Christy Finch dropping to the bench for Nathan Stone.

Wroxham started well and arguably had the better of the opening exchanges.

Remy Gordon was looking particularly lively, the winger almost breaking the deadlock on 11 minutes when he crashed off the underside of the bar and out after some good attacking play.

Both Gordon and Kyle Baker – working on the opposite flank – were causing problems for their opponents, with the Heybridge defence having to defend strongly to counter their balls into the box.

Damien Green saw a decent header go close for the hosts as they looked to come into the contest, before Wroxham seized the initiative on 32 minutes as they took the lead.

A lovely cross-field ball from Price found Gordon on the Wroxham left, the winger digging out a cross that found Jamie Forshaw waiting, the front-man sweeping home a cool finish past Danny Sambridge for 1-0.

Heybridge responded well, going close through George Coklin’s free kick that flew inches wide, before Billy Hunt struck just wide before the break after a sharp break.

The hosts began the second half strongly, controlling most of the ball and pushing Wroxham onto the back foot.

The Yachtsmen – led well by skipper Andy Howell – were dealing well with what was being thrown their way, with only half chances coming the Swifts way.

Hunt then crashed the bar with a superb effort with 13 minutes to go as the home side looked to push their foot on the accelerator, before Fitchett found the goal their play arguably deserved with five minutes to go.

The defender capitalised on a mix up in the Wroxham defence to tap in for the Swifts, after Elliot Pride had saved well from Jack West’s header.

Both sides had chances in the closing stages - West firing just wide for the hosts in the best of these – but 1-1 would be how it would stay as Wroxham fell to 7th in the table, three points off the play-offs positions.

Wroxham: Pride, Price, Rust, Hinton, Howell, Halliday ( Garrod 70’), Baker (King 74’), White, Stone, Forshaw (Finch 81’), Gordon

Unused: Guyton, Swatman
