Yachtsmen slip out of Ryman play-off's

Thomas Crabb8 Apr 2015 - 18:20

Wroxham dropped out of the Ryman North play-off positions as Soham Town Rangers came from behind to secure a well earned 3-1 victory.

The Yachtsmen took the lead through Kyle Baker’s low drive in the 18th minute, a lead they held for a mere eight minutes as Soham soon drew level through Callum Russell.

The hosts were looking buoyant as the second half started and they took the lead through Ryan Sharman’s 50th minute strike, before they gave themselves a two-goal cushion nine minutes later as Matt Simpson fired in from Russell’s long throw.

And despite Wroxham’s best efforts in the dying moments, Soham saw it out to send The Yachtsmen out of the play-off positions with just four games to go.

Stewart Larter will be disappointed to have dropped more points as his Wroxham side search for a place in the Ryman North top five, with Thurrock dispatching Romford 6-2 to leapfrog them into fifth place by one point.

Larter made three changes from the side that drew with leaders Needham Market on Easter Saturday, with Jack Guyton earning a starting berth ahead of the absent David Hinton, whilst both Kyle Baker and Ben Price were called up for Jack Garrod and Matt Halliday respectively.

After kick off was delayed for 15 minutes due to traffic, The Yachtsmen started brightly and they took a deserved lead on 18 minutes through Baker.

The winger collected the ball on the right edge of the box, cutting inside before firing a low effort across Jamie Greygoose and into the bottom far corner to claim his first league goal since his move from Kirkley and Pakefield.

If Larter was hoping this goal would push his team on, he would be disappointed as The Greens responded in kind.

Some smart work from Matt Simpson down the right exposed The Yachtsmen back four, the striker digging out a dangerous cross that found Callum Russell waiting to strike a sharp effort into the bottom corner past Pride.

The hosts were in a buoyant mood but some good organisation and grit from the Wroxham back four kept them at bay until half time.

Soham continued to press as the second half began and it wasn’t long before they completed the turnaround and took the lead on 50 minutes.

A long throw from Charlie Russell – a ploy that deceived the Wroxham defence all day – found Ryan Sharman with too much space from 12 yards out, the Soham man turning on a sixpence to fire past a helpless Pride and in for 2-1.

And it wasn’t long before it was 3-1 as another Russell throw caused havoc in the Wroxham defence.

Simpson was the man who profited this time around, the striker finding space with industry before acrobatically sending a scissor-kick past Pride and into the net.

This third goal gave Soham the cushion they needed, and despite Wroxham’s best efforts in the closing stages, the hosts saw the game out to dent The Yachtsmen’s hopes in their quest for the play-offs.
