Wroxham hold out for a point

Wroxham hold out for a point

Thomas Crabb8 Apr 2015 - 18:25

Wroxham produced a resolute defensive display to earn a potentially crucial point against league leaders Needham Market at Trafford Park.

Christy Finch had an early header that was easily saved by Shaun Phillips, before Needham had the first of two first half penalty shouts turned down on 18 minutes after Danny White had downed Michael Brothers.

Another appeal for a spot kick was turned away on 40 minutes – Andy Howell this time getting away with a challenge on Luke Ingram – before Phillips produced an excellent double save from first Jamie Forshaw and then Finch.

Needham began to push Wroxham back in the second period - Ollie Fenn heading over on the run on 62 minutes in their best opening – before Finch almost found strike partner Nathan Stone with nine minutes to go for the hosts but the ball was just behind him.

Pride again saved from substitute Luke Ingram on 83 minutes with his feet as Needham searched for a winner, but The Yachtsmen held on to earn what may prove to be a vital point in their quest for the play-offs.

Stewart Larter and his men will ultimately be happy with a point that keeps them in the Ryman North play-off’s, although Dereham Town’s 1-0 win over Waltham Abbey means that both Matt Henman’s Magpies and 7th placed Thurrock are both breathing down Wroxham’s neck.

Stewart Larter made one change to his Wroxham side from their win against Redbridge, with Danny White replacing Jordan King in midfield.

Neither side really grabbed the initiative in a cagey opening, with both sides spreading the ball about nicely without too much threat.

Wroxham showed the first promise of an attack, Christy Finch rising highest to head an 8th minute centre goalwards that was easily collected by Shaun Phillips.

Wroxham continued to press better than their lofty opponents, Remy Gordon blazing a ten minute free kick wide after David Hinton was fouled on the edge of the box, before Jack Garrod had an optimistic 35 yard effort that was deflected wide for a Wroxham corner that came to nothing.

The league leaders began to warm to the game as it passed the 15 minute mark, Ollie Fenn testing Elliot Pride with a long range effort that the Wroxham ‘keeper spilled, only to reclaim it at the second attempt.

Needham were in again two minutes later – with appeals for a penalty after Michael Brothers’ was allegedly downed by White in the box waved away – before a slick move in the 18th minute found Luke Ingram bearing down on goal, only for the onrushing Pride to beat the Needham man to the ball.

Needham were beginning to control proceedings, with Fenn again creating problems halfway through the first period, the midfielder capitalising on a poor pass from Danny Rust to get in, only to blaze his effort well over when he really should have hit the target.

Wroxham were dealing with the pressure well, but were unable to find much of an out ball down the other end and the league leaders continued to try and impose their authority.

And it almost paid dividends in the 40th minute as again they had shouts for a penalty, referee James Turner instead opting to give Wroxham the free kick.

Andy Howell was caught short and seemingly brought Ingram down in the box, with Turner adjudging the Needham man had dived and booked him.

The Yachtsmen needed something to shout about, and they almost snatched the lead going into the break as Phillips denied them with a superb double save on 43 minutes.

A slick move found Jamie Forshaw with space just inside the box, the red-hot frontman smashing an effort towards goal that was palmed away by the Needham ‘keeper, with Phillips reacting well to get out get up and block Finch’s follow up effort from 10 yards.

Needham continued to assert the pressure at the start of the second half, pressing the ball higher up the pitch and forcing The Yachtsmen to sit deeper.

Larter’s men found themselves penned back at times, but despite the visitors’ pressure, they were struggling to test Pride in goal.

Wroxham were limited to set pieces, almost benefitting from a Gordon free kick on 61 minutes that was deliciously whipped in with Stephen Taylor lurking, but Phillips was on guard to collect the bouncing ball and snuff out any danger.

Needham then went down the other end and came close from a set play of their own 60 seconds later, Ingram whipping in a lovely corner from the left that found Fenn bursting in at the near post, the midfielder sending his header on the run over Pride’s crossbar.

Despite the league leader’s sustained pressure, they were struggling to break down a resolute Wroxham defence who were answering the questions posed time and time again.

It was becoming more and more apparent that one goal either way could decide the contest, with both sides going close to doing so as the game entered the last 10 minutes.

Wroxham were the first to go close, a raking ball finding Finch pulling off his man at the back post, the striker collecting the ball before sending it across for Nathan Stone, the substitute unable to get the ball that in fairness was just behind him.

Needham then went down the other end and went close themselves, Sam Newson beating the offside trap to streak down the left wing and descend on Pride, the Wroxham ‘keeper doing well to tighten the angle and save well with his feet.

The visitors went close again with five minutes to go, Taylor blocking well after a ball in from the left found Ingram with space from 12 yards out, before the clearance found Finch down the other end, who could only blaze Kyle Baker’s knock down well over.

And this would prove to be the last act in a tight game, with Wroxham seeing out the final moments to keep themselves inside the league’s top five.
