Wroxham come up short against Great Wakering

Thomas Crabb30 Mar 2015 - 18:31

Wroxham’s play-off hopes hit another stumbling block as they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Great Wakering Rovers.

The Yachtsmen thought they were on the way to a hard fought victory after Jamie Forshaw has stole in to give his side the lead on 54 minutes, only for Tony Jacobs to convert from close range with 11 minutes left for the visitors to make it three games without a win for Stewart Larter’s men.

Larter’s side still find themselves in the Ryman North play-off positions – albeit a place lower than kick off in 5th – but this slight lapse in form at an important time of the season may indicate a slight feeling of pressure among the ranks.

Wroxham made three changes from the side that drew at Romford on Wednesday night, with Elliot Pride replacing Luis Tibbles in goal.

Skipper Andy Howell was also unavailable after requiring nine stitches in the game against The ‘Boro, with Ben Price taking his place at the back and Jordan King replacing the missing David Hinton in the centre of midfield.

In a tit-for-tat opening – with possession changing hands frequently due to the bobbly pitch underfoot – it was the home side who seemed to have more gusto in attack.

Top scorer Christy Finch was looking lively, firing narrowly wide having been put through by strike partner Nathan Stone in the 12th minute, before attempting an acrobatic effort five minutes later in the form of an overhead kick that flew well over the Rovers’ crossbar.

Stone was then forced off through a hamstring injury after chasing a long ball and colliding with a barrier in innocuous circumstances, with Jack Garrod replacing the striker.

This change in formation seemed to throw The Yachtsmen and – while they were still the enforcers going forward – a lack of quality in the final third meant an absence of clear cut chances going into half time.

The second half started more positive as Larter’s men pushed for an opener.

Forshaw was the first to try his luck, firing into the side netting on the angle after a cross from Finch, before the latter then struck the post with a fierce effort after some good work from Remy Gordon down the wing.

This pressure ultimately paid with 54 minutes as Forshaw broke the deadlock. Garrod drove down the right and dug out a dangerous cross that several Wroxham players went for at the back post, Forshaw showing the most desire to get to the ball first and divert it in.

Many would have hoped the goal would have given Wroxham the impetus to push on and kill of the game, but in fact it had the adverse effect as Great Wakering began to push forward for the first real time in the game.

Billy Johnson was thrust on to give them more attacking presence, and it seemed to work as Elliot Pride was called upon to produce some smart stops, most notably from Jay Nash with 75 minutes gone from a fierce 20 yard effort.

It seemed that an equaliser was on the cards, and it duly arrived four minutes later as Jacobs diverted a cross from the right into the back of the net from five yards to level matters.

Wroxham huffed and puffed in the final ten minutes and despite some promising situations they were unable to find that final ball and had to settle for a point that still keeps them in the top five, albeit opening the door slightly for those below them.
