Dogged Yachtsmen claim well earned point

Dogged Yachtsmen claim well earned point

Thomas Crabb15 Feb 2015 - 18:45

Wroxham kept their Ryman North play-off ambitions on track with a well deserved 1-1 draw away at Harlow Town.

Both sides threatened in an entertaining opening, before Danny White gave the lead to the visitors with a low drive on 25 minutes.

Jordan King then missed a glorious chance for 2-0 two minutes later, before Harlow levelled five minutes before the break through Alex Read’s 20 yard effort, with James Smith then striking the crossbar for the hosts on the stroke of half time.

The open manner continued in the second half – David Cowley coming within inches for the hosts - before Kyle Baker struck the crossbar for Wroxham with 18 minutes to go.

And despite both sides searching for a winner, it would all be in vain as they had to settle for a point apiece that on the balance of play was probably fair.

The draw keeps The Yachtsmen in the Ryman North play-off positions, although AFC Sudbury’s 3-0 win over Burnham Ramblers meant they dropped down to 5th, two points ahead of local rivals Dereham Town.

Stewart Larter made two changes from the side that lost to Tilbury last weekend, with Jordan King and Kyle Baker coming in for Jamie Forshaw – who dropped to the bench – and Remy Gordon, who was missing.

The hosts came out quicker in an open start, Shane Stamp testing Elliot Pride early on with a well struck shot from the edge of the box after finding space, with the Wroxham ‘keeper getting down low to tip the effort away.

The Yachtsmen began to ease themselves into the game as it reached the quarter of an hour mark, with the lively Kyle Baker finding himself with plenty of space at the back post, only to fail to keep his volley down.

Wroxham looked in the mood and they were all of a sudden in the ascendancy, with Danny White almost breaking the deadlock five minutes later.

A neat one-two between White and Christy Finch allowed the midfielder space on the edge of the box to arrow a shot towards the top corner, only for Andy Walker to deny him with a spectacular fingertip stop.

However, White wouldn’t have to wait long to have another chance to beat the Harlow ‘keeper, one that he duly accepted on 25 minutes to give his side the lead.

Some nice interplay down the right allowed the Wroxham man to control expertly and burst into the box, taking a touch before driving a low effort across Walker and into the far corner.

Wroxham’s attack was in full flow and they should have doubled their advantage two minutes later.

A slip from Harlow defender Josh Urquhart allowed Baker the chance to cross, his square ball finding King with just the ‘keeper to beat from 10 yards out, only for Walker to close the angle out and make the save.

This spell of pressure from The Yachtsmen gave a wake up call to the home side and they began to hit back in kind, Junior Dadson dragging a left footed effort wide, before Marc Gorbell failed to hit the target with a stooping header when well placed.

The pressure from the hosts was increasing as the game flowed towards half time, and it eventually tolled on 40 minutes as goal machine Alex Read got his side back on level terms.

The Ryman North top scorer was found by Urquhart with a searching long ball from 20 yards out, the striker letting the ball bounce before sending a fierce effort over Pride and into the net in style.

Some late drama then produced chances for both sides in frenetic end to the half, James Smith pivoting on the edge of the box to find himself a yard of space before sending a superb strike that crashed off the crossbar, before Urquhart had to be at his best to deny a Wroxham attack with a superb last ditch tackle.

The second half continued in the same entertaining vein, Jack Garrod almost catching Walker out with an ambitious long range effort that had the ‘keeper back peddling, before Read tested Pride again from a nigh on impossible angle that the Wroxham shot-stopper was more than a match to.

Chances were coming at both ends, Stephen Taylor testing Walker on 54 minutes with a well struck left-footed effort, with Dadson missing two half chances for Harlow as both teams pressed.

Harlow captain David Cowley – who was unusually quiet – then missed a great chance with 20 minutes to go, the ball falling to him deep within Wroxham territory, only to slice his effort over the bar when he really should have hit the target.

Although the hosts were arguably on top, Wroxham still had plenty of gusto in attack and they almost took the lead through Baker on 72 minutes, trying his luck from 20 yards that cannoned back off the bar and out.

Stamp then came within inches of snatching it late on for the hosts, arriving late to almost connect with Junior Appiah’s ball in with the diving header, but this would prove to be the final flurry in an entertaining game as both teams earned what could prove to be a vital point in the Ryman North promotion chase.
