The win was The Yachtsmen’s first in over a month and comes as a welcome relief to Stewart Larter and his men, who’s recent run of poor results had begun to look like putting their place in the play-off positions in jeopardy.
After a tight start from both sides, the game came alive at both ends as the woodwork was struck twice in the space of four minutes by either side.
Barkingside were the first to go close, Wroxham losing possession outside their own box, with Joe Bricknell picking up the loose ball before sending a fine 20 yard curling effort that struck the outside of the post and went wide.
Wroxham responded in kind four minutes later, some quick passing between Jack Garrod and Jamie Forshaw finding Christy Finch, who’s shot from the angle was expertly tipped onto the crossbar by Tim Pitman.
The Barkingside ‘keeper had to be aware again five minutes later as Wroxham and Finch were in again, Forshaw sending the front-man in one-on-one, with his attempt at rounding Pitman being thwarted at the last by the sprawling shot stopper.
Wroxham were looking dangerous in attack, but a slight lapse in concentration at the back let their hosts in on 32 minutes as they took the lead.
Lewis Frances found space inside the box to fire a shot a Elliot Pride, who parried the effort straight at the onrushing Bricknell, who made no mistake to bury the rebound and take the lead for his side.
They didn’t hold this lead for long though as Wroxham hit back four minutes later, Finch finding Jordan King on the edge of the box, the midfielder taking a touch before sending a well-struck effort into the bottom corner to level matters.
The Yachtsmen came out stronger in the second half and almost went ahead in somewhat fortunate circumstances, Garrod whipping in a 47th minute corner that almost sneaked in at the near post, with Pitman doing well to tip the effort over the bar.
This confident start to the half was then rewarded with 56 minutes on the clock as they did take the lead through Finch.
Forshaw crossed to the striker, who found space from 14 yards out to fire a powerful effort at Pitman the goalkeeper only managing to get half a hand on the strike as it found the back of the net for his 25th goal of the season.
Wroxham were enjoying themselves as they showed the sparkle that has been missing in recent weeks, Garrod coming inches away from making it 3-1 as his 40 yard effort from a scuffed Pitman clearance went just over with the ‘keeper in no-mans land.
Remy Gordon then went close as the game entered the final 10 minutes, some good interplay between Jack Guyton and Forshaw finding the winger who fired across Pitman and just past the far post.
And The Yachtsmen were almost made to rue these missed chances as Barkingside spurned a golden chance in injury time to draw level, Weemes firing well over from 10 yards when clean through to let Wroxham off the hook and bring a deserved end to their recent poor run.
