Last-gasp Finch saves Yachtsmen

Last-gasp Finch saves Yachtsmen

Thomas Crabb14 Dec 2014 - 10:09

Christy Finch’s injury time equaliser saved Wroxham’s blushes in an underwhelming 1-1 draw against Cheshunt.

The Yachtsmen controlled the ball for long periods of a tight first half but found themselves 1-0 down on 41 minutes as Luke Illsley scored for Cheshunt with a deflected effort.

Wroxham were huffing and puffing but couldn’t get their usual incisive passing going, with Cheshunt happy to sit and hit them on the break.

Elliot Pride saved superbly from an Adam Bolle header on 70 minutes, before David Kendall placed wide when free from six yards as The Ambers failed to take their chances.

And Finch stole in at the death to snatch a late equaliser, reacting quickest to Matt Halliday’s flick on to strike home and earn a dramatic point.

Stewart Larter’s men were dominant on the ball for much of the game but lacked the edge in the final third, with Finch’s late heroics stealing a point that for much of the game never looked like coming.

Wroxham made two changes from the starting XI that beat AFC Sudbury 2-0 on Tuesday night, with Jordan Attree earning his first start at the expense of Jack Garrod and Danny Rust stepping in for Jordan King at the back.

The Yachtsmen had some good early possession, but the boggy pitch underfoot was making it difficult for any free-flowing passing from either side.

The visitors were the first to find a bit of space in the opposing area, Mitch Hahn collecting Josh Fagbohun’s ball in from the right only for his effort to be deflected wide by Andy Howell.

Remy Gordon then had an effort of his own ricochet away, before an 18th minute free kick from the winger caused panic in the Cheshunt penalty area, with Jordan Attree trying an audacious overhead kick that was blocked away as The Yachtsmen began to exert some pressure.

Whilst Wroxham were controlling possession, their opponents were arguably having the better of the openings.

Adam Bolle registered the first shot on target after 24 minutes for The Ambers – with Elliot Pride saving well – before the ‘keeper was called into action again three minutes later, stretching well to claim Hahn’s ball in ahead of the onrushing Allen Bossman.

Wroxham were trying to break down the rigid Cheshunt defence, but were struggling to pierce through.

Cheshunt on the other hand seemed happy to sit back and try and hit their opponents on the break, a ploy that worked on 41 minutes as they took the lead.

David Hinton was guilty of giving the ball away, with the visitors pressing and the ball finding Luke Illsley, who took a touch before striking his effort past Pride – via a deflection off Howell – off the bar and in.

The seemed the spur Wroxham into action and they almost restored parity three minutes later, Gordon nicking in behind the defence to fire a ball across the box with goalkeeper Glenn Williamson in no-mans land, only for the clearance to deflect off Dave Kendall and over from three yards.

The Yachtsmen came out quickly in the second half and were moving the ball across the deck well.

Despite their control of the ball, they still had to be aware of their opponents counter-attacking play, Illsley almost laying in Bolle, with the striker just unable to nick it away from Pride, who stood up well.

The Ambers were then lucky to still have a full complement of players on the pitch in a flash point on 52 minutes.

A 50-50 ball between Ben Price and Allen Bossman led to the latter leading with two feet raised, and despite winning the ball, the intent was certainly there from the Cheshunt winger.

The Yachtsmen thrust Nathan Stone into the game to try and get more of a physical presence up top, and he almost had an immediate impact on 68 minutes as Wroxham searched for a way back into the game.

Finch was the supplier, working hard down the left to outmuscle Ellis Sands and find a ball into the box with Stone lurking, only for Kendall to nick the ball away from the striker from four yards out.

Sands was then involved down the other end two minutes later as a superb fingertip save from Pride kept Wroxham in it.

A break down the right found the defender, who whipped in a delicious ball to find Bolle free from 10 yards, the striker flicking his header towards goal but not past the flying Pride, who tipped the ball wide of the left hand upright.

The Yachtsmen were huffing and puffing but their forward passes were far too often long and hopeful.

This played into Cheshunt’s hands as they continued to break with danger, Kendall missing a golden chance to put the game to bed with five minutes remaining.

Cheshunt found space down the right, Mitch Hahn delivering a lovely ball in that found Kendall waiting free from six yards out, the defender skewing wide when he really should have hit the back of the net.

And the visitors would rue these missed chances as Finch made them pay in the last minute of injury time to snatch a dramatic point.

Gordon found time and space to dink a lovely ball in to Halliday, who flicked the ball onto the striker to poke home from 10 yards and send a wave of relief around Trafford Park.
