Yachtsmen seal victory over Batch's boys

Yachtsmen seal victory over Batch's boys

Thomas Crabb9 Dec 2014 - 22:29

Wroxham returned to winning ways as goals from Christy Finch and Remy Gordon saw Stewart Larter’s men to a gritty 2-0 win against Sudbury.

Finch got the ball rolling in the 12th minute, calmly slotting home Gordon’s cross-field ball for his 23rd goal of the season.

Jamie Forshaw then sliced wide moments later as Wroxham pushed for a second, with Scott Kemp testing Elliot Pride with a 25 yard effort that the ‘keeper palmed away with style.

The second half saw a more compact approach from the hosts as they looked to hit Sudbury on the counter attack, a tactic that worked on 69 minutes as Remy Gordon slammed home a second.

Pride again provided the heroics with a stunning point blank save from Terry Rymer on 73 minutes, but this proved to be their only real chance as Wroxham held out for a well deserved victory.

Wroxham made two changes from the side that lost to Thurrock, with Andy Howell and Matt Halliday replacing Danny Rust and Stephen Taylor.

The conditions made it difficult for either side to settle, with Wroxham defending the strong wind.

A couple early robust tackles from the visitors saw them single out their intentions early on, with a 3rd minute Remy Gordon free-kick deceiving all bar Jack Wilkinson who cleared well.

Kris Newby was looking dangerous for Batch’s men in attack - striking well wide 60 seconds later – before missing the first real opening of the game on ten minutes, the midfielder again scuffing his effort wide of the right hand upright after finding space on the edge of the box from a quick break.

Despite battling against a strong headwind, The Yachtsmen were still causing a threat going forward and a quick break saw them break the deadlock on 12 minutes.

Jamie Forshaw dispelled a Sudbury attack to spark a two-on-one situation for his side, Gordon latching onto his through ball to take a touch and cross for Christy Finch, the mercurial front-man taking a touch before slotting past the advancing Marcus Garnham.

Two minutes later they were in again, Gordon once more the catalyst with a scything run after intercepting a sloppy pass, the winger laying in Forshaw who let the ball come across him but could only miss kick wide.

Forshaw had another bite at the cherry five minutes later, Garnham saving well from his deflected effort from distance, before recovering superbly to smother Danny White’s follow up effort from six yards.

The Yachtsmen were looking dangerous in attack despite the challenging conditions, but they had to be wary of the Sudbury threat going forward and the visitors began to get more of a foothold in the game.

Scott Kemp tested Pride with a lovely 25 yard effort that the Wroxham shot-stopper clawed away from the top corner with panache, before Terry Rymer headed over well when placed from three yards out.

The visitors were beginning to get more of a stranglehold on the game as it passed the half hour mark, with some more controlled possession across the pitch.

However, they weren’t able to make the most of the favourable conditions as Wroxham held onto their lead going into the half time break.

The second half got off to a slow start, with The Yachtsmen almost making the most of having the wind in their favour three minutes after the restart, Finch just unable to latch onto Pride’s long goal kick and nick it round Garnham.

A spate of yellow cards for the away side was disrupting the flow of the game as they began to get frustrated.

The conditions began to worsen as the heavens opened, with Wroxham creating in fits and starts without too much in the way of threat.

A couple of opportunities came their way but just lacked that final ball, before Christy Finch stung the palms of Garnham with a fizzing effort from 25 yards that the ‘keeper beat away well when off balance.

And this threat in attack soon paid off as they doubled their advantage through the ever-dangerous Gordon on 69 minutes.

The winger was released by Forshaw in a quick break, Gordon driving into the Subdury box before smashing into the top corner for 2-0.

This seemed to spur the away side on and they missed a guilt edged opportunity on 73 minutes to reduce their arrears.

Matt Halliday sliced his clearance to allow Jordan Blackwell the chance to deliver a cross, the winger finding Rymer with acres of space to head towards goal, only for Pride to deny him with a superb point blank save.

However, this proved to be only a slight response as they failed to trouble the Wroxham back four any more, with Wroxham seeing out the remainder of the game to bounce back and close the gap on Harlow and Needham Market above.
