Wroxham bounce back in style

Thomas Crabb15 Nov 2014 - 18:19

Wroxham bounced back from their derby defeat in style as they annihilated a sorry Burnham Ramblers 8-0 at Trafford Park.

The Yachtsmen scored four times in a whirlwind first half, Remy Gordon starting the ball rolling on 11 minutes, before Jamie Forshaw bagged his first goal in five games with 22 minutes gone.

Finch then got his 21st goal of the season just after the half hour as Wroxham assumed complete control, with Gordon notching his second – and 8th in as many games – to seal the victory before a second half ball was kicked.

Danny White and David Hinton both hit the woodwork as they went searching for more in the second half, and they duly came as they struck four more times in the final 13 minutes.

Jack Garrod got the first on 77 minutes, before Nathan Stone (2) and a late Danny Self free kick got the Yachtsmen back to winning ways in emphatic style.

The win is Wroxham’s second 8-0 victory at home this season and will be a welcome relief for Stewart Larter and his men following Tuesday’s night disappointment.

Wroxham named an unchanged side from the Dereham game, with Jordan King the only absentee from the squad through injury. The Yachtsmen showed no signs of any derby day blues early on, piercing through the Burnham defence on three minutes courtesy of Jamie Forshaw’s through ball, Christy Finch making space on the left before finding his strike partner, only for Forshaw’s effort to be blocked from 10 yards.

Forshaw was menacing with his runs down the Burnham left, bursting down the wing from Stephen Taylor’s lofted ball before finding Finch with the goal at his mercy, only for the striker to scuff his shot straight at Matt Belcher and away with 10 minutes gone.

However, The Yachtsmen would not have to wait long to break the deadlock as Remy Gordon blasted in his 11th goal of the season 60 seconds later.

Finch’s ball in from the left was met by Belcher’s punch, which went high but with no distance and after some strong hold off play by Nathan Stone – with a slight hint of a high foot – Gordon was allowed to slam home his volley into the right corner.

Stewart Larter’s men were in complete control as they went in search for more goals - Forshaw flashing an effort wide of the post – before the Wroxham front-man got the goal his early efforts deserved on 22 minutes.

Some slick interplay from Wroxham saw Danny White find Andy Howell with a lovely slide rule pass, the Wroxham captain lashing it across the box to Forhsaw, who fired low into the bottom right corner from 20 yards.

The boys in blue were toying with their opponents every time they attacked, Finch again finding himself in a great position but could only place his effort off the right post and out with 27 minutes on the clock.

However, these earlier missed chances proved to only be a blip for The Yachtsmen’s leading scorer as he made things 3-0 after 33 minutes.

Ben Price was the supplier this time, sliding the mercurial striker in behind the Burnham defence once again, Finch composing himself with a touch before slotting the ball across Belcher and into the far corner.

The visitors had no answer to Wroxham’s constant attacking surges, Stone bursting through on 38 minutes only to shin his effort just wide of the post, before two minutes later Gordon got his second – and Wroxham’s fourth – with 40 minutes gone.

David Hinton slotted the winger in, with Gordon beating Emmanuel Johnson for pace before placing across Belcher on the angle to cement the hosts lead.

With half time approaching, the away side finally began to get a foot on the ball – a little too much too late – and they carved out their best chance of the half on 45 minutes, Bradley Nobbs swinging in a ball from the right that L’Heureux Menga headed wide when he really should have done better.

Burnham came out with more bite at the start of the second half but Wroxham’s defence was holding strong, whilst down the other end they still searched for more goals.

Gordon fired straight at Belcher, whilst Finch saw an effort roll just past the Burnham post and Hinton had a 20 yard effort that flicked off the top of the bar and over.

Despite the visitor’s improvements, they were still leaving themselves exposed at the back and Wroxham carved them open again just before the hour mark, Gordon finding Finch down the left, the striker laying in White whose effort was deflected onto the post and out.

Burnham were having more of the ball without troubling Wroxham too much, Menga heading over under pressure in their only real chance of note.

Wroxham were similarly quiet in attack as the game went into the final 15 minutes, before they accelerated through the gears to score twice in a minute and pile more misery on their opponents.

Jack Garrod bagged the first, controlling a ball in from the right before firing high into the net via a deflection, before Stone produced a moment of individual brilliance for 6-0 sixty seconds later.

The striker controlled the ball with his chest before surging through the Burnham half, keeping his composure with Belcher bearing down on him to lift the ball over the onrushing ‘keeper and into the net.

The Burnham shot-stopper managed to restore some pride with a superb triple save – from Gordon, Finch and Stone respectively – with 84 minutes gone, but he was soon picking the ball out of his net for a 7th time, Stone again beating him when he nodded in Gordon’s ball in on 87 minutes.

And club stalwart Danny Self completed the rout in added time, stepping up to curl a lovely 25 yard free kick into the top right corner to propel The Yachtsmen to third place in the league.
