Wroxham hit sorry Romford for eight

Thomas Crabb11 Oct 2014 - 17:21

Christy Finch continued his fine goal-scoring form to bag four goals as an inspired Wroxham annihilated Romford 8-0 at Trafford Park.

Finch notched two goals in the first 18 minutes to seize control for the home side, Remy Gordon finding him on both occasions with two delicious through balls.

Nick Reynolds hit the bar as Romford threatened a slight riposte, but it didn’t last long as Finch bagged his hat-trick before the interval, finishing well on the angle to claim his first triple in a Wroxham shirt.

Forshaw then got in on the act after 63 minutes to tap home Gordon’s dragged ball across, before Finch got his fourth with some neat footwork after 77 minutes.

Moments later it was 6-0 as Forshaw bagged his second, with Gordon finding the goal his played deserved for 7-0 and Jordan Attree completing the rout on 88 minutes to give Stewart Larter his biggest win since taking over at The Yachtsmen.

Wroxham made three changes from the side that beat Tilbury last weekend, with David Hinton, Steve Taylor and Danny Self replacing Ben Price, Matt Halliday and Jack Garrod.

The Yachtsmen came out the blocks flying, Nathan Stone firing high and wide after a long ball by Eliott Pride after 90 seconds.

Remy Gordon then struck the post two minutes later as Wroxham searched for an early opener, Romford goalkeeper Aaron Omand saving well from in-form striker Christy Finch, with the rebound falling to Gordon whose strike hit the right hand post and flew out.

Stone then had an effort that went just wide of the left hand post as Wroxham continued to dominate, before the home side found a breakthrough, with Finch again the man in the right place at the right time.

The Wroxham top scorer latched onto a great through ball from Gordon on 10 minutes, before turning on a sixpence from 12 yards and firing low into the bottom left corner for 1-0.

The home side were enjoying themselves as Romford were giving them plenty of time to play, with balls over the top from the Wroxham midfield utilising the pace of Finch and Stone on numerous occasions.

And it was the former who again provided the magic with 18 minutes gone to double his side’s advantage and claim his 12th goal of the season.

Another superb through ball from Gordon unlocked the Romford defence, Finch outpacing David Ottley to calmly slot home on the angle to claim his second of the afternoon.

It was all Wroxham as the half reached the midway point, Finch again in the thick of it with 22 minutes on the clock, Forshaw finding his strike partner with a neat lay back after good play down the right from Stephen Taylor with Finch firing inches over when he really should have hit the target.

The away side finally began to find their feet as the half hour approached, Reece Tranter registering their first real chance of note with a shot from the edge of the box that Pride palmed away.

This seemed to spur the away side on, Pride again in the thick of it on 37 minutes as the home side were lucky to not give away a penalty, the Wroxham shot-stopper flapping at a ball in with Reynolds lurking and seemingly bringing down the striker, the referee instead blowing for a free kick in Wroxham’s favour.

The Boro’ then had their best chance of the half as the dangerous Reynolds threatened again, Reece Cosson doing well to find a cross from the byline that found the Romford striker, who turned in the box but could only divert his effort onto the bar from eight yards.

However, this proved to be only a brief response from the visitors as Wroxham moved up the gears again on the stroke of half time, Finch showing his clinical nature to complete a first half hat-trick – his first for the club – turning well in the box before firing low to the ‘keepers right.

Romford were sent out for the second half with a flea in their ear but it seemed to have an adverse effect as the second period began, Wroxham again in the ascendancy with Stone showing good feet to fire in the from the right wing, Finch just getting beaten to the ball by Geroge Cocklin from three yards.

Wroxham seemed happy to sit on their lead but were still threatening every time they advanced, Forshaw having an effort cleared off the line on 55 minutes, before Pride was called into action down the other end from Eddie Hart’s effort that he tipped wide with panache.

With the home side controlling all aspects of the game, it wasn’t a surprise when they bagged their fourth with Jamie Forshaw getting in on the act on 63 minutes.

Danny White was fed by Stone, the midfielder’s dinked effort being palmed away by Omand with Gordon latching onto the rebound to fire an effort across the box that found Forshaw waiting at the back stick to slide the ball into the back of the net on the angle.

Stone then had an effort that flew just wide from 25 yards, before Romford again looked to gain some sort of consolation on 66 minutes, Tranter dragging his shot just wide of Pride’s right post.

Wroxham were playing with their opponents and it wasn’t long before 4-0 turned into 6-0, with two goals in the space of 60 seconds compounding their Romford’s misery.

Finch got the first, latching onto another ball from Gordon to keep his composure and take it round Omand with some classy footwork before stroking into the empty net.

Straight from kick off the home side were at it again, Finch finding Forshaw on the edge of the box for the striker to fire home from 18 yards.

The Yachtsmen were enjoying themselves and went hunting for more goals over a Romford side who were bereft of confidence.

And these goals kept on coming as the game neared its conclusion, Gordon finally finding the goal that his play deserved after 84 minutes, collecting the through ball to keep his feet and fire in off the post through a crowd of people.

And Attree completed the goal-scoring fun with two minutes left of normal time, Gordon again the supplier with a simple ball in from the left that the Wroxham substitute let come across his body before firing into the roof of the net to complete an astonishing win.
