Yachtsmen's run ended by rivals

Yachtsmen's run ended by rivals

Thomas Crabb11 Nov 2014 - 23:18

Wroxham’s six game winning streak came to an abrupt end as Dereham Town claimed local bragging rights with a 2-0 win at Aldiss Park.

The Yachtsmen controlled the early exchanges but could not muster a clear cut chance, with Dereham seizing control on 37 minutes through Ryan Hawkins’ deflected effort.

The home side were much more composed in the second half - Andy Howell clearing a Toby Hilliard effort off the line - before Matt Hockley’s superb 25 yard effort assumed control for The Magpies on 66 minutes.

And the home side saw out the remainder of the game without too much incident to earn their third successive win over The Yachtsmen, and end Stewart Larter’s sides incredible recent run.

Wroxham named an unchanged side from the one that beat Aveley 5-0 on Saturday as they went in search of their seventh league win on the bounce, and it was the away side who started with the more control, enjoying some good early possession without much threat, whilst The Magpies had two Michael Clunan corners that were easily cleared.

Wroxham had the first effort on goal, a quick break on nine minutes from Remy Gordon through the middle, the winger finding Christy Finch who beat two men before weakly striking an effort down to Andy Wilton’s right that was easily collected by the Dereham goalkeeper.

Both sides were exchanging possession without much bite in attack, Hawkins finding space on 11 minutes on the edge of the Wroxham penalty area, only for his poorly struck effort to tamely roll past the right post.

The Yachtsmen were looking quick and confident on the attack, Nathan Stone sending a lashing volley wide of Wilton’s right post after Gordon’s free kick in, before the latter then had a dipping volley of his own that flew over the Dereham crossbar following Jamie Forshaw’s fine through ball.

Craig Bussens header over from Clunan’s devilish 24th minute corner in Dereham’s best opening, whilst Finch blazed a 28th minute free kick high and not very handsome as both side’s struggled for clear cut chances.

The home side finally managed to find their feet as the game passed the half hour mark, Hockley scuffing an effort from the edge of the Wroxham box, before Hawkins had two efforts in the space of 60 seconds that were well held by Pride.

However, the Dereham winger wouldn’t have to wait long before he did one better, somewhat fortunately giving his side the lead with a deflected effort.

Clunan’s 37th minute corner was cleared up in the air by the Wroxham defence, only for it to fall to Hawkins on the edge of the box, whose driven effort flicked off a couple Wroxham defenders and nestled into the bottom right corner, a strike that separated the sides going into the break.

The Magpies came out of the blocks quicker after half time, Hawkins again looking dangerous with a looping effort that Pride tipped over, before the resulting corner fell to the winger again, his dipping half volley on the run flying over from the angle.

The Yachtsmen were struggling to get a foot on the ball as Dereham were pushing higher up the pitch and beginning to assume control of the match.

Hawkins was looking increasingly lively, the winger sending a vicious effort on 52 minutes that looked destined for the top corner with Andy Howell blocking the effort with his face.

The home side were then guilty of missing a great chance for 2-0 as the game approached the hour mark, Howell again foiling them, mopping up after Toby Hilliard’s scuffed effort at the back past deflected off Pride’s legs and towards goal.

The game was beginning to get scrappy, with some niggling tackles breaking up the flow of the game.

This suited the home side and they doubled their advantage with a superb solo effort on 66 minutes.

Hockley picked the ball up in the middle of the park and drove at the Wroxham midfield, outmuscling two players before sending an arrowed effort that beat Pride and nestled in the top right corner, with Pride disappointed not to do better.

Wroxham were looking seemingly bereft of ideas as the game reached the last 15 minutes, with numerous wayward passes leading to frustration among the players.

And despite some good late possession, the away side were unable to carve out any clear cut chances, with Dereham seeing out the final moments to hand Wroxham their first league defeat in six weeks.
