Wroxham FC travelled to Wilderness Lane, Harleston in the quarter-finals of The Norfolk Senior Cup and secured a 3-1 Victory, however this was not a walk in the park! the opening 40+ minutes saw our boys 1-0 down after just 13 minutes. A corner by Scott Roberts was headed home by Jake Anema. Ollie Sutton made a good save from a free kick around the 35 minute with the resulting scramble eventually cleared by our defence. Wroxham were now beginning to dominate, and just as half time approached the Harleston defence were pulled in and a simple ball over the top left Harvey Black to put in Charlie Clarke a tap home from 2-3 yards out. Half time nearly here, but as usual the relentless Wroxham side were at it again, Sutton swooping off of his line clearing upfield Clarke picking up the ball beating one player, stretching another with his pace then rounding the keeper to slot home a second just before the half-time whistle blew.
The second half saw Wroxham capitalise on a poor back-pass seeing Ryan Oakley pick up the ball only to be bought down in the box by Harleston keeper Ross Bilham. However the resulting penalty was saved by Bilham with a dive to his left!
A couple of saves from Sutton from free kicks and a last ditch well timed tackle from Mac Gee stopped an almost certain goal from young Spencer Cawcutt. Harleston were now chasing the game and were committing players forward surely it was only a matter of time, then Shaun Taylor picked up a ball from Harvey Black rounding the Home keeper once more to to bury the third and tie clinching goal. But wait the Home team bench are creating that was off-side! NO! says the assistant referee. A 3-1 victory to Wroxham seeing them into the semi finals of this Historical Cup competition.
The Norfolk Senior Cup is the oldest of the County’s cup competitions with a history that stretches all the way back to the 1881-82 season when Norfolk and Norwich became the inaugural winners as they beat Lynn Town 3-1.
Lynn Town & Norwich CEYMS became regular winners of the trophy in the early years. King's Lynn took the cup back to the west of the county an amazing four seasons on the trot between 1954-55 and 1957-58, beating Gorleston, Gothic, Great Yarmouth and most impressively Norwich City in that time.
More recently, the competition has been dominated by Clubs that compete in the Bostik League & Southern League:
2018-19: Dereham Town 2-1 Thetford Town (AET)
2017-18: Downham Town 2-4 Norwich United (AET)
2016-17: King's Lynn Town 2-0 Fakenham Town
2015-16: Dereham Town 2-0 Norwich United
