Hellesdon provide stout resistance

Chris Green16 Nov 2016 - 14:35

Wroxham completed the job to gain a confidence boosting 4-1 win in this 3rd round Norfolk Senior Cup tie against Anglian Combination Div 1 side Hellesdon.

Hellesdon started in a spirited way pressing the Wroxham back line and gaining the first corner of the game.
Meanwhile Wroxham made a nervy start with passes going astray but they took the lead on 16 minutes. A corner was punched away by ‘keeper Bird only as far as Vinny Datacompol whose return effort went straight through the defensive barrier and found the net.
This goal lifted the Yachtsmen who scored a second two minutes later. A good move saw Cruise Nyadzayo sprint past two defenders to get in a cross and as the ball was only partly cleared it fell for Ben Lewis to hit a half volley past the ‘keeper.
With their tails up, Gilfedder tried an ambitious shot from range which wasn’t too far wide. Then a free kick from the same player went past the wall and just beyond the post.
Wroxham were well on top but allowed Hellesdon back in the game on 42 minutes. Sweeney lost the ball near the halfway line and Hellesdon broke quickly with a cross from the right perfectly set up for former Wroxham player Mac Gee to hit in to the roof of the net giving Elliot Pride no chance.
This set up the game for an interesting second half of cat and mouse as Hellesdon reverted from their adventurous first half play to one of playing deep and allowing Wroxham to press forward.
The Anglian Combination side played this way quite effectively for long periods and while Wroxham dominated possession they could not find a way past a solid defence. Hellesdon occasionally broke out and more than once threatened to get back in the game.
Wroxham made substitutions and almost gained a 3rd goal when Danny Rogers hit a 20 yard shot which brought an excellent save from Bird with Gilfedder unable to convert the loose ball.
Then a good effort from another sub Davillion Katabana was struck across goal and went narrowly wide of the far post.
Finally Wroxham turned the screw as Gilfedder brushed aside his defender to hit a low shot inside the near post on 80 minutes.
The Yachtsmen finished off with another goal on 83 minutes with a header from Rogers converting a loose ball in the area.
This basically finished off Hellesdon who worked hard throughout and some of their players were now suffering from cramp on the heavy pitch. So Wroxham were the first team to make it to the quarter final and will find out who their opponents are in the draw on Radio Norfolk Friday week.
