Yachtsmen see off Yarmouth in Senior Cup

Adrian Gowling9 Dec 2015 - 19:47

Wroxham progressed to the quarter final of the Norfolk Senior Cup with a 4-1 victory over Great Yarmouth Town at Trafford Park writes Tom Wardle.

The Yachtsmen have been unbeaten in the competition since May 2014 having been crowned Champions at Carrow Road last May. Wroxham made two changes from the side that drew at home against Romford last Saturday as they hoped to progress in the Norfolk Senior Cup. Elliot Pride remained in goal, defence was also unchanged, as Stephen Taylor started at right back, Lewis Sturman played at left full back with Matt Halliday and Ollie Ebbage once again partnered up in the centre of defence. Further up the pitch, Jack Guyton and Ashley Jarvis were replaced by Matty Waters on the right side of midfield, and David Hinton, in the centre midfield spot where he was joined by Michael Sommerfield. Jack Garrod started left midfield. Jamie Forshaw and Captain Nathan Stone partnered up front.

Wroxham dominated from the starting whistle. In the very first minute Jack Garrod and Stephen Taylor linked up well which saw Taylor’s cross deflected out for a corner. The home side only minutes later won another corner, after Taylor’s through ball to Nathan Stone in the box was met by a fancy back-heel flick by the forward, but the ball was cleared inches before it reached the foot of Jamie Forshaw. The Yachtsmen then thought they had opened the scoring. Jack Garrod whipped the corner into the box, Matty Waters then struck the ball sweetly from the edge of the box before the ball was spilled by keeper Liam Hembling. Ollie Ebbage pounced on the loose ball but only to be judged offside by the officials.

Midway through the first half Great Yarmouth seemed to have settled the storm. The Bloaters went close to taking the lead as the ball was played to Sean Perfect, but he was unable to live up to his name and chipped the ball over the goal.

Wroxham then countered, David Hinton drove forward before finding Nathan Stone, his shot was fantastically saved to the keeper’s right. Not long after Wroxham got a well-deserved goal. Michael Sommerfield's perfect ball though the defence found Jamie Forshaw who then played the ball across the 6 yard box to Nathan Stone who kept his cool and stroked the ball into the left corner of the net. Just before half time Wroxham doubled their lead. A ball into the 6 yard box was glanced into the net by the foot of Michael Sommerfield to send the Yachtsmen into half time knowing a win would take them into the next round of the cup to play Kings Lynn Reserves,

Great Yarmouth came out and started the second half well. Ollie Ebbage was forced to make a sliding tackle to prevent Sean Perfect from running on through on goal. Callum Mordecai then saw his shot from the edge of the box fantastically saved by the fingertips of Elliot Pride down to his left hand side. Wroxham came back with a vengeance however. Five minutes later up the other end of the pitch following a corner. Jamie Forshaw received the ball to the left of the area, he played a crisp ball into Ollie Ebbage on the penalty spot, before the Wroxham defender turned and placed the ball into the bottom left corner to add a third goal to the home side’s tally. A few minutes later an Ollie Ebbage tackle was adjudged as a foul on the edge of the Wroxham area and the youngster was given a yellow card for the incident. The free kick was played into the area where Yarmouth's Mordecai’s overhead kick saved by Pride.

Great Yarmouth then got given a life line, as the ball fell for their captain Connor Deeks on the edge of the Yachtsmen’s box. The midfielder smashed his half-volley into the top right hand corner of the net giving Pride no chance to make the score 3-1. Manager Stewart Larter looked to freshen his side up as Jack Garrod was replaced by Jordan King. A Minute later David Hinton was fouled on the edge of the area in a very promising position for the blues. A great set-play was executed as Jamie Forshaw fooled the defenders by running over the ball whilst Michael Sommerfield beautifully curled the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net and to cancel any sign of a comeback for the Bloaters. Matty Waters and the hard-working Jamie Forshaw were replaced by Tom Rampling and Jordan Attree as Wroxham looked to run down the clock but Great Yarmouth had one last chance to get a second consolation goal before the final whistle. The chance went begging as the ball smashed over the bar by Connor Deeks.

Overall Wroxham showed their quality with the two sides being two leagues apart. The Yachtsmen appear to have finally steadied the boat as this was their third game unbeaten. Saturday's trip to league leaders Cray Wanderers will be an entirely different opposition and a challenge to this run.
