Wroxham make it three on the bounce

Thomas Crabb3 Mar 2015 - 22:40

Wroxham secured passage to their third successive Norfolk Senior Cup final with a cagey 2-0 win over Norwich United.

The Yachtsmen came out of the blocks flying and found themselves 1-0 up after 47 seconds, Danny White tucking in from Christy Finch’s pull back.

This goal gave Wroxham the opportunity to sit back and did so with relative ease, Norwich United not testing Elliot Pride in goal until 57 minutes when he tipped over Adam Bennett’s 25 yard free kick.

And this strength at the back paid dividends as substitute Kyle Baker raced down the other end on 82 minutes to seal the win with a smart finish.

In a game devoid of clear cut chances, it was Wroxham who had the more clinical edge in front of goal that in the end proved pivotal in their way to another county showpiece at Carrow Road.

Wroxham made three changes from the side that defeated Chatham Town in their last home game, with Danny Rust, Kyle Baker and Jordan King all dropping to the bench at the expense of returning skipper Andy Howell, Jamie Forshaw and Remy Gordon.

Norwich United – lead by former Wroxham boss Damian Hilton – named seven ex-Yachtsmen in his starting line up and a further two on the bench, although star striker Matthew Blake was missing through illness.

The Yachtsmen made an electrifying start and found themselves 1-0 up after just 47 seconds through Danny White.

A quick break from the midfielder released Christy Finch down the right, the striker taking a touch before dragging the ball back to White, who slotted home first time past Duncan Mcnally and in.

With the fast start promising so much, a rather cagey period followed as both sides failed to seize control.

Former Wroxham striker Paul Cook was being his usual robust self, giving Howell and Matt Halliday a handful at the back.

Referee Mark Chalkley pulled the striker back for a free kick in his favour when advantage may have been better suited, before the striker was adjudged to have handled when turning smartly in the box on 18 minutes.

Wroxham were creating in fits and starts but Finch was cutting an isolated figure up top, with the Yachtsmen top-scorer having to make his own luck, something he almost achieved on 23 minutes only for his sublime touch round the corner to just get away from him.

The Planters – for their part – were playing some neat football without too much penetration, Adam Bennett curling straight at Elliot Pride from distance on their only half chance on 25 minutes.

The home side were looking the more dangerous going forward despite having less of the ball, Jack Garrod heading harmlessly wide from Finch’s driven ball in, before Stephen Taylor dinked an inviting ball just wide of the right post with Gordon lurking after the defender collected White’s scuffed effort inside the box on 27 minutes.

Cook was looking increasingly like United’s best outlet, although some over exuberance from the striker earned him a 33rd minute yellow for a late challenge on Howell.

If this was the negative side to the striker’s game, he certainly showed his positives three minutes before half time, outmuscling Howell to turn him on the halfway line before finding Ross Durrant, the winger cutting across only to shank his effort high and not very handsome.

The second half continued in the same cagey vein, with United still having more of the ball without really testing a stern Wroxham back four.

A snapshot that went well wide from substitute Jamie George was matched by a Jamie Forshaw effort that was never in serious contention of testing McNally in the only real efforts, before a foul by David Hinton just before the hour mark presented the visitors with their first chance to really test Elliot Pride.

Bennett stepped up from 25 yards to take the set piece, with his curling effort that was heading for the top corner being superbly tipped over by the Wroxham ‘keeper, who injured himself in the process.

Two more scythed efforts that flew well wide from Finch and Forshaw respectively was the best The Yachtsmen could offer, before an untimely slip from Halliday almost let Norwich in.

The defender was being harried in possession by Cook and his attempted clearance was sliced straight at Durrant, the winger trying to cut into the box only to be foiled by the ever-present Howell, who slid in to snuff out the imminent danger.

Larter thrust on Kyle Baker in an attempt to give his side some more gusto in attack, a tactic that almost worked with 12 minutes to go as he sent Finch through for a wonderful chance.

The winger beat his man on the halfway line with some strong running before sending Finch through one-on-one, the striker trying to round McNally only for the ‘keeper to get a touch on it and push him wide, with the chance being lost.

However, it would not matter as the two forwards combined again four minutes later to double Wroxham’s lead and seal their passage to Carrow Road.

Finch was the supplier, heading down to the advancing Baker just into Norwich’s half to spark an attack, the electric winger beating Jamie Speller all ends up before slotting the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

This knocked the stuffing out of the visitors who, up until this point, were pushing for an equaliser, with The Yachtsmen seeing the remaining minutes out with consummate ease to set up a mouth-watering all Ryman North final with Dereham Town.
