Wroxham through to the Norfolk Senior Cup Final at Carrow Road

Wroxham through to the Norfolk Senior Cup Final at Carrow Road

Tom Joyce20 Feb 2013 - 10:10

Wroxham sailed through to the final of the Norfolk Senior Cup by beating Spixworth 0-3.

The Yachtsmen went in to this game on the back of two convincing wins and were looking to take to Spixworth straight from the off. However Spixworth looked the more promising of the two sides in the first 10 minutes; keeping the ball well, and not giving Wroxham any time on the ball, making it very difficult for the Yachtsmen to get a foothold in the game.

Spixworth forced Wroxham in to the first corner of the game on 4 minutes and the home side nearly capatalised from it when the cross fell to Spixworths Ben Gowing in the area but Goalkeeper, Scott Howie, was quick off his line to stop the half volley from the Spixworth Centre Back hitting the back of the net.

On 7 minutes Wroxham were awarded their first corner of the game but Andy Eastaugh could only direct his header wide of the goal from Ross Durrant's delivery. Wroxham's first real chance of the game.

Spixworth looked good on the ball for the first 10 minutes but couldn't really create many clear openings in front of goal.

And although Wroxham looked off the pace for the 10-15 minutes, they created the best opportunity on the 10 minutes mark when Matt Daniels played in Matt Blake. The striker went through on goal but was denied a goal following a crucial last ditch tackle by a Spixworth defender, just as Blake was about to pull the trigger.

Spixworth then had a claim for a penalty on 12 minutes quickly turned away by the Referee, who was being watched by a number of Norfolk FA representatives, when a Spixworth forward took a tumble in the Wroxham area. However it looked as though the Spixworth player was looking for the penalty, going down far too easily.

Wroxham started to find their rhythm around the 15-20 minute mark, passing and keeping the ball well, trying to work an opening and taking the game to Spixworth. Ross Durrant saw his 20 yd effort sail just over on 24 minutes and Blake had a good opportunity on 25 minutes but saw his tame header in the box comfortably saved by the Spixworth goalkeeper.

Wroxham continued to press well for the opening goal and got what they deserved on 29 minutes when Thompson was found in the box, turning a Spixworth defender before putting the ball past the home sides goalkeeper to make it 0-1 to the Yachtsmen.

Thompson then had another great opportunity on 32 minutes when Blake was played in down the right and delivered a low cross across the face of the goal in to the path of Thompson but he could only guide his effort from 7 yds over the bar.

The visitors did soon increase their on 35 minutes when Thompson was played through on goal, only to be brought down by the Spixworth centre back, Gowing, in the area, and Wroxham were awarded a penalty. Gowing was given his marching orders for being the last man. The referee had no other choice but to show the red card.

Matt Daniels stepped up to take the penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way, and increasing the Yachtsmen's lead to 0-2 which they took in at half time.

HT Spixworth 0-2 Wroxham

After enjoying Spixworth's exceptional hospitality, the teams were soon back out on the field, with Spixworth deciding it was the right time to make changes, replacing two.

There wasn't much to note in the first 20 minutes of the second half, with the majority play being battled out in the middle of the park with no real opportunities being created in front of goal by either side.

With the second half not really matching Wroxham's half time team talk objectives, they decided it was time to make changes around the 60th minute mark, with Andy Eastaugh being replaced by Gavin Lemmon, and Ben Lewis replaced by Sam Harty soon after.

Sam Harty went straight in to the middle of midfield along side Gavin Lemmon, who took over the captain duties from Danny Self. And Harty looked keen, having a couple of decent efforts on goal, one of which was cleared off the line.

Remi Gordon used his pace well down the left on more than one occasion, out sprinting Spixworth's Right Back on 70 minutes and cutting in to the box before having his shot blocked well by the defender.

Matt Blake was replaced by Striker Jamie Forshaw with approximately 20 minutes remaining, and it only took a little more than a minute for the former Lowestoft and Kings Lynn forward to find his feet having his first attempt on goal in the 71st minute which he struck sweetly but the Spixworth Goalkeeper saved well.

Spixworth didn't create an awful lot going forward, and although Wroxham weren't at their best, the home side never really looked like worrying Scott Howie in the Wroxham goal in the second half, although in the 74th minute one of Spixworth's Forwards used the line well and found space in the Wroxham the area, but Matt Halliday got back and defended well, blocking the shot on goal and denying Spixworth a chance to get back in the game.

With Spixworth not really creating much in the final third, they decided to have one last attempt by making their final substitution, bringing on an attacking midfielder. But Wroxham were the ones who continued to take advantage of 10 man Spixworth in the midfield and pressed Spixworths backline for their third goal. Sam Harty again coming close in the 85th minute from 25yds, but his effort went just wide.

The Yachtsmen sealed the victory by scoring their third goal in the 88th minute when Thompson got on the end of a corner, and put the ball in to the back of the net with his head/shoulder from 8yds.

Although Wroxham weren't at their best, they still showed that extra bit of quality in the final third, but credit was still due to Spixworth who pushed the visitors all the way and gave the Yachtsmen and spectators, who came in their numbers, a good game.

The Wroxham officials would also like to thank Spixworth FC for the exceptional hospitality.
