Wroxham Women climbed to the top of the table after a hard-fought 4-1 victory at Bowers & Pitsea on Sunday afternoon.

After a fairly even start to the game, it was the visitors who created the first chance with Birchall having a shot saved before Bullard made a run down the flank and crossed but Hoy was unable to get to the ball.

After a quick break from Bowers which saw the away defence stretched resulting in a dangerous cross that was missed by all players, the home side came closest to scoring. Wroxham conceded a foul on the edge of the penalty area and from the free-kick, the hosts hit the crossbar before the ball was cleared upfield.

Bowers were having the beat of the play midway through the half and a poor throw from Bell in the Wroxham goal was intercepted with the host’s striker firing just over the bar, before Bowers hit the woodwork for a second time from another free-kick.

Slowly the visitors started to get a foothold into the game. Holloway has a shot deflected for a corner, then after receiving a through-ball from Birchall, saw an effort go just wide of the target.

However, just two minutes later Wroxham took the lead. A move starting in their own half, saw Mungham-Gray feed Cooper who sent a crossfield ball to Birchall, who in turn cut inside, beat the keeper and scored.

The visitors now pushed forward looking to assert some dominance and it was the same combination which led to the visitors second goal. Cooper again putting Birchall away for Wroxham’s leading scorer to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Despite having the lions share of play, Wroxham conceded a sloppy goal which allowed the hosts to reduce the deficit. Losing possession in midfield, a long shot beat Bell in the away goal, although in added time at the end of the half, Wroxham restored their two-goal advantage. Birchall completing her hat-trick after out-pacing the defence.

It was a slow start to the second half with neither side asserting any dominance. Kindred had a shot blocked after an initial shot from Birchall was half saved by the keeper, whilst at the other end, Bell was adjudged to be fouled when collecting a long ball from Bowers.

Play became very much bogged down in midfield, with neither side testing their opposite keepers until a long cross into the Wroxham goal-area saw the hosts hit the woodwork for a third time. Bell going for the ball was injured and centre-back Parker came on to deputise in her place.

Midway through the half, a Larkins free-kick landed on top of the net after Birchall had been fouled before Kindred had a shot blocked from Mungham-Gray’s cross.

The final ten minutes of the game saw the visitors hold the upper hand with Brister seeing a shot palmed past the post and Mungham-Gray shoot just wide. However, in the final minute, Cooper fired a low shot past the keeper from a free-kick after Mungham-Gray had been fouled to give the visitors a 4-1 victory to move them to the top of the league table.
