Yacthswomen Sunk By Hatters

Richard Giles11 Mar 2020 - 21:29

The Hatters completed the double over Wroxham after a 3-0 victory at The Brache on Sunday afternoon.

After an even start to the game which saw Birchall fire just wide of the Luton goal and at the other end, a home attack down the right cleared for a throw-in, it was the hosts who created a couple of clear-cut chances.

Firstly, from a ball through the centre, Wroxham struggled to clear the ball, with a shot just wide of the post, before a poor clearance from a goal-kick, saw the home striker miss the target with only Bell in the Wroxham goal to beat.

The visitors were relying on mainly counter-attacks and from a cross from the right flank saw Birchall’s effort blocked before Love saw her shot also blocked, then Hoy’s cross from the rebound was cleared by the home defence. Another quick attack from Wroxham through the centre saw Bullard lay the ball back to Love whose shot was just wide of the target.

Shields quick reaction saw her deflect the ball out for a corner from a dangerous move down the right flank, however in the 40th minute the hosts scored the opening goal. From a cross the ball was headed over Bell into the net.

Just before the break, Allsopp having won possession in midfield, put Holloway free down the right but her cross was collected by the home keeper as the hosts went into the break with a slender 1-0 lead.

The hosts almost increased their lead within a minute of the restart with a ball through the centre but Bell saved with her legs before the ball was cleared upfield.

Good interplay between Holloway and Bullard saw Symonds set free down the right before being fouled, however the free-kick into the penalty area was comfortably cleared by the hosts.

It was then the hosts turn to put a free-kick into the penalty area after the visitors had been penalised and the clearance from Wroxham fell straight to a Luton player who shot straight at Bell, but 5 minutes later the hosts doubled their lead with a shot over Bell into the corner of the goal.

Luton were reduced to 10 players midway through the half, when after bundling Birchall over just outside the penalty area, said something untoward to the referee and received her marching orders. From the free-kick the home keeper gathered at the second attempt.

Now with an extra player, Wroxham pushed forward and Bullard won a corner after being put away by Holloway, but Birchall was penalised for a foul on the keeper from the set-piece. A minute later, Scully’s free-kick was saved by the keeper after a foul on Birchall.

However, with 5 minutes remaining, Luton scored a third. Fullbrook who had replaced Bell, saved a ball through the centre, but the unfortunate Symonds diverted the rebound into her own goal.

The final action of the game saw the home keeper claim a couple of crosses from Holloway as the hosts completed the double over the Yachtswomen.
