Wroxham Women returned to winning ways with a comfortable 6-1 victory against St Ives Town at Trafford Park on Sunday afternoon.

After an even start with both teams feeling each other out, it was the visitors who forced the first corner of the game, which saw Fullbrook in the Wroxham goal fouled when collecting the ball from the set-piece. In Wroxham’s first meaningful attack of the game, a long ball into the penalty area from Larkins was half cleared straight to Birchall, who controlled the ball and converted into the bottom corner from 18 yards, to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead. Birchall bought down after receiving a pass from Bygrave and from 30 yards placed the free-kick into the top corner past a rooted keeper. Within a minute, Wroxham had made it 3-0 with Hoy scoring from an acute angle after a sliced clearance from the away keeper.

As the half progressed, most of the play was taking place in the St Ives half and the visitors were forced into playing long balls upfield which were comfortably dealt with by the home defence. In a rare attack by St Ives a long shot was well wide of the target.

The hosts continued to push forward especially playing the ball out to the flanks with both full backs having the space to attack wide. Cooper had a dangerous cross headed clear then Birchall cutting inside from the wing saw a shot skim the top of the away crossbar.

On the stroke of half-time, Wroxham thought they had scored a fourth, after Cooper’s cross had been palmed onto the bar by the keeper and Pasque slotting home the rebound. However, after consulting his assistant, the goal was ruled out for offside. The away keeper was injured in the process and after a lengthy delay, the referee blew for half-time with Wroxham 3-0 ahead.

The curse of the injured keeper saw Fullbrook having to be replaced by Bell in the Wroxham goal after appearing to roll her ankle in the first minute of the second half.

A timely interception by Pasque put Cooper in the clear but the shot on target was held by the keeper, before the away defence allowed a long ball to bounce allowing Birchall to attempt to lob the keeper which was saved. At the other end, Bygrave blocked a rare attempt on goal by the visitors.

In the 61st minute, Brister found her way into the referee’s notebook after a clumsy tackle as the home side continued to dominate. Cooper had a shot well saved, before Parker saw a long free-kick palmed away for a corner. Brister’s game came to an end 9 minutes after her first caution when receiving a second in an altercation with an opponent leaving Wroxham to play out the final 20 minutes with 10 players.

However, this did not affect the hosts, with half the side involved in the fourth goal totalling at least 11 passes before Bullard fed Birchall who slid the ball past the keeper for her hat-trick. Three minutes later, Birchall scored her second free-kick of the game after the visitors had been penalised for handball 25 yards from goal, the ball flying into the top corner to give the hosts a 5-0 lead.

The hosts emptied their bench with Symonds and Mungham-Gray taking the field and within a minute, Birchall scored her fifth of the game, latching on to a long ball from Parker and giving the keeper no chance with the ball into the top corner of the goal.

Five minutes before time, St Ives scored a consolation goal, but it was the hosts who deservedly collected all 3 points.
