Yachtswomen secure excellent point on the road.

Yachtswomen secure excellent point on the road.

Richard Giles13 May 2023 - 15:59

A battling and gritty performance saw the Yachtswomen return from Bedfordshire with a point after a 1-1 draw against Luton Town.

After a fairly even start, it was Wroxham who created the first chance with Waters having a shot saved by the home keeper before Walker won a corner on the left flank. From the set-piece Kindred’s cross was headed out and a goal bound shot by Wroxham unfortunately hit their own player.
In the 10th minute the hosts took the lead after a cross from the right wing was converted by a striker. Gowing was then forced into a good save after a move down the left caught out Wroxham on the sloping pitch.
Despite playing up the pronounced slope, the Yachtswomen were able to apply pressure on Luton and Catchpole forced a corner which was cleared by the hosts. However, in their next attack, Catchpole was adjudged to be fouled in the area. Unfortunately for Wroxham, Hodgson’s penalty came back off the crossbar.
The rest of the half was mainly dominated by Luton but the young Yachtwomens defence stood firm and shots on goal were limited and comfortably dealt with by Gowing, although they did hit the post with one effort.
After the break, the first 10 minutes saw Wroxham getting accustomed to playing with the slope and play was mainly taking place in midfield.
The first real attack came from Luton with the striker put through one-on-one against Gowing, but the young Wroxham keeper stood firm and pulled off an excellent save at the strikers feet and prevent Luton doubling their lead.
As the half went on, Wroxham were seeing more of the ball in the Luton half and Waters and Catchpole tested the home keeper who looked nervous at times.
With five minutes remaining, Wroxham got the equaliser they richly deserved. A flowing move down the right saw Catchpole cross to Waters to guide the ball past the keeper and level the score.
The final minutes of normal time and an extra nine of added time saw Luton pile forward, but all Wroxham players put in a shift to repel all attacks to take a point back to Norfolk.
