Cup Final Misery For Wroxham

Cup Final Misery For Wroxham

Richard Giles13 May 2022 - 09:38

Wroxham’s hopes of winning the League Cup in Rebecca Burton’s last match in charge was not to be, losing a keenly contested final through goals in both halves writes Keith Mayo.

A consolation goal 10 minutes into second half added time gave the score a more respectable feel - Wroxham being better than the final score suggests.

Wroxham changes to the starting line-up from last Sunday saw Naomi Cooper and Rosie George come in for Charlotte Gardiner-Banks and Holly Walker who were both named as substitutes. Played at Haverhill Rover’s New Croft in dry conditions, Wroxham kicked off attacking the Chalkstone Way end of the ground.

Early on fortune favoured Wymondham. A back pass to their goalkeeper Chloe Pearce needed a one touch clearance which went through Grace Birchall’s legs. A trend for the afternoon started soon afterwards. Wymondham’s Leah Newcombe committed a foul on George in front of the benches and Brogan Scully was bundled over by Wymondham’s Katie Knights.

Wymondham’s first goal came after 9 minutes from their second attack. Lauren Nicholls knocked the ball through for Hannah Waters to run onto. Hope Strauss, sensing Waters may have been offside, looked over to the assistant while in pursuit of the striker who slipped the ball past Cyan Fulbrook. Three minutes later things became worse for Wroxham. Scully, while sending a dummy to Nicholls nearby, twisted her knee. The game was delayed for five minutes. A stretcher was called for but wasn’t needed - Scully was aided off the pitch and replaced by Walker.

Most of the game Wymondham played three at the back. The additional player in midfield helped them chase Wroxham when out of possession. Wroxham’s quick one and two touch passing along the ground to play their way out of danger (rather than kick the ball aimlessly up field) just got quicker – aided, possibly, by the pitch being watered an hour before kick-off. It didn’t always work but, the possession game meant cup favourites Wymondham only had two other notable chances in the rest of the half. First, a Knights header over from Chelsea Clarke’s left footed in swinging corner kick. Second, after 23 minutes, the exact same move that produced their first goal – a pass from Nicholls through to Waters - but Fulbrook could gather the ball ahead of her opponent.

Wroxham had their first corner after 30 minutes. Wroxham grew in stature after that and had the better of the half. Six minutes before half time a move down the left involving George and Walker saw Lauren Bullard, strike a powerful shot against the cross bar resulting in Pearce pushing the ball away for a corner. Another move saw Jess Horn send a ball down the touchline for Birchall to chase and cross right footed from the goal line for Pearce to grab.

Half time: WROXHAM 0, WYMONDHAM TOWN 1.

Wymondham had an early chance – a one on one between Nicholls and Fulbrook who made a glancing save but in the process was ran into by Nicholls. Both lay injured. After a discussion between the referee and the assistant a drop ball was given to Wroxham near the touchline.

Eight minutes later, Fulbrook made a point-blank save from the same forward. There were more delays throughout the half while Wymondham players required treatment - Waters was injured when no Wroxham players were nearby.

After 11 minutes Naomi Cooper sent Birchall down the right who when the ball went behind the goal line made an unsuccessful appeal for a corner. After 27 minutes, Jess Horn ran through the midfield but the shot was wide. A shot by Gardiner-Banks from a Birchall pass was saved by Pearce.

After 42 minutes Wroxham’s Rebecca Russell received a yellow card for no obvious reason. Wymondham then had an aimless shot from 30 yards, seemingly to kill time – five minutes earlier their Jennifer Codman was substituted and was allowed to walk to the far side touchline at a slow pace. A minute later Wymondham were awarded another freekick, this time after a Wroxham player appeared to have won a tackle fairly. Clarke’s powerful strike toward Fulbrook’s left resulted in Wymondham’s second goal.

Wroxham’s goal came from a penalty. Birchall felt, stood a few feet in front of Pearce who held the ball on the ground, that her shot had crossed the goal line. Birchall appeared to be tripped afterwards by Newcombe which resulted in the referee, after talking with the assistant, giving a yellow card to the offender and awarding a penalty. Player Of The Match, Bullard, stepped up and shot low to her right flat footing the goalkeeper. There was just enough time left for the game to restart.

Full time: WROXHAM 1, WYMONDHAM TOWN 2.
