FA Cup Run Ends At Luton

Richard Giles16 Oct 2020 - 14:46

Wroxham bowed out of the Women’s FA Cup after a 5-0 defeat at Luton Town on Sunday afternoon.

Depleted by injuries and unavailability, which saw the team’s three leading goalscorers missing, the side knew they would have to battle it out to get through to the next stage.

The first threatening attack of the game came from the visitors with Holloway forcing the hosts to concede a corner, however, the set-piece was comfortably cleared by Luton.

As the half progressed Luton started to have majority of the play. From a ball not cleared by Wroxham, Fullbrook in the away goal was called into action to palm the ball away for a corner, from which an attempt just clear the bar.

The home side continued to push forward and saw an effort just wide of the target, before the pressure finally paid off in the 16th minute when a ball over the top of the Yachtswomen’s defence saw the Luton striker beat Fullbrook to the ball and guide it into an empty net.

A rare Wroxham attack allowed Holloway to feed Bullard but the home keeper was alert to clear the ball out for a throw-in.

The home side doubled their lead 5 minutes later, after an attack down the left flank saw a cross turned home by an unmarked player to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Fullbrook was seeing plenty of action in the away goal and was forced into a good save 5 minutes before half-time, then she pulled off an excellent save from a penalty awarded for handball, as Luton went into the break with a 2-goal cushion.

As in the first half, Wroxham had the first attack after the interval, with Scully putting Bullard away down the right flank who laid the ball inside to Rowland, only to see her shot blocked by a defender.

Despite a more even start to the half with both sides having attempt on goal, it was the hosts who scored in the 65th minute, with Fullbrook unable to stop a shot after a move through the centre.

Midway through the half, Wroxham had their best spell of the game. A dangerous quick break was only halted when Bullard was pulled up for offside, then Banks was beaten by a last-ditch tackle after the keeper had mis-judged the bounce of the ball. Scully had a run past two defenders and shot just wide of the target in the visitors’ final attack of the game.

Two goals in the final 3 minutes sealed Wroxham’s fate as the hosts lined up a home tie against Cambridge City in the next round.
