Women Advance In FA Cup

Richard Giles9 Sep 2020 - 21:06

The Yachtswomen advanced into the preliminary round of the FA Women’s Cup after a convincing 10-0 victory over Kettering Town at Trafford Park on Sunday.

New signings Russell and Dawson featured in the starting line-up with another five on the bench as the hosts looked to strengthen their side for the start of the new season.

Most of the early pressure came from the hosts. Birchall shot just wide after receiving a long throw-in from Bailey then Russell went close after Birchall laid the ball into her path.

The home side playing a high line and led by Horn frustrated the visitors whose first two attacks were halted for offside. At the other end, both Russell and Birchall had efforts just wide of the target.

Whilst majority of the play was taking place in the Kettering half, the away keeper was not severely tested with shots straight at her or wide of the target. However, the deadlock was finally broken in the 34th minute. Birchall played the ball wide to Holloway, whose cross was laid back by Bullard to Russell and the debutant fired the ball into the goal from 25 yards.

Five minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead, the visitors only half-clearing a Holloway cross with the ball falling to Russell who converted into the bottom corner for her second goal of the game.

Just before the interval, Birchall was unable to capitalise on a defensive mistake as the hosts went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead and Fullbrook in the home goal virtually a spectator without having to make a save.

Cossey signed from Ipswich Town was introduced at the start of the second half and made an instant impact on the game. Within a minute of the restart, cutting inside of her marker Cossey was brought down in the penalty area and Bullard calmly slotted home the penalty to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Two minutes later the hosts scored a fourth. Cossey crossed to Birchall who controlled the ball and hit a half-volley past the helpless keeper. It got worse for Kettering with Bullard forcing the keeper into an excellent save however, the ball came back off the crossbar and she was on hand to convert the rebound.

A fourth goal in the opening nine minutes of the second half killed off the game as Cossey deservedly got on the scoresheet to put the hosts 6-0 up after slotting home Holloways cross.

Rowland replaced Bailey with 30 minutes remaining and was soon into the action playing a ball through the centre which Bullard dummied for Cossey to run onto and fire a shot into the top corner. It was 8-0 two minutes later, with Birchall heading past the keeper as the rampant hosts continued to push forward.

Only an excellent double save by the Kettering keeper prevented Bullard from getting her hat-trick on 70 minutes, but Cossey was not denied hers 8 minutes later when curling the ball into the far corner of the goal.

Russell made it double figures with her third goal of the game in the closing minutes to round off a five-star performance from the Yachtswomen who will travel to King’s Lynn Town in the next round.
