Wroxham win by the odd goal in seven

AFC Sudbury 3 Wroxham 4

In the last four weeks, on Tuesday’s nights, with a growing list of absentees, Wroxham have gone away to a trio of sides who operated at step three last season.

The trips to Canvey Island and Hashtag United brought four points and last night’s exhilarating win at AFC Sudbury took the total to seven and ensured the Yachtsmen moved into second place, only behind Hashtag on goal difference.

Once again, Jordan Southgate had to shuffle his pack. Ethan Binnie, who had travelled from Kent, returned between the sticks and Harry Sparrow came into midfield.

Wroxham started well. In the opening minute, Ben Lewis went on a trademark, marauding run and his shot warmed the palms of Finley Iron in the Sudbury goal.

It was then the turn of Ryan Hawkins to force Iron into action and the opener that Wroxham were threatening soon followed.

Shaun Taylor fed Hawkins out wide, he cut inside, played the ball to the edge of the box and benefiting from a ricochet, Taylor was on hand to score his second of the season after 12 minutes.

Moments later, a free kick from Hawkins found Jordan King who was inches away from doubling the lead.

It was 2-0 on 23 minutes after Louis Simmons put Hawkins clear and the striker made no mistake with a clinical finish across the goalkeeper.

With AFC Sudbury struggling to cope with Hawkins, the centre forward scored again six minutes later to make it 3-0.

The home side had barely had a sniff but pulled a goal back just before the break when Scott Sloots finished following a goal mouth scramble after a free kick was floated into the box.

On the hour it was 4-1 when Louis Simmons beat the offside trap to race clear and score his third of the season.

Sloots pulled another one back with a towering header from a free kick and just four minutes later it was 4-3 when another set piece was headed home, this time by captain, Kyran Clements.

Wroxham had chances to extend the lead through Simmons and substitute, Ryan Gray whilst restricting a resurgent Sudbury to efforts from distance.

After four minutes of injury time, Wroxham had seen the game out and returned to Norfolk with three valuable points.
