During the week, Jordan Southgate had brought in goalkeeper Ethan Binnie to cover for Tom Coombe and the former Cambridge United academy prospect, Ryan Gray returned to the club following a short loan spell last season.

Both players were named in the starting XI, along with Harry Sparrow who has had to settle for coming off the bench this season. Billy Batch who had not played since suffering an injury in the FA Cup tie against Ipswich Wanderers, was named amongst the substitutes.

It took the Yachtsmen just three minutes to take the lead. A high through ball was misjudged by a Buckhurst defender and seized on by Ryan Hawkins who nodded the ball down before knocking it past his marker with his right foot and finishing beautifully with his left.

In a fast start to the cup tie, Brad Rowland wasted an opportunity to equalise on six minutes when he blazed over from close range. Gray was denied on 12 minutes and soon after Sammy Johnson was denied by a well-timed challenge just as he was about to shoot.

Hawkins spurned the chance to score his second and double Wroxham’s lead when he saw his penalty saved by Alex Caras after 21 minutes.

Football is a game of fine margins and within two minutes, the visitors were level when Shane Temple hammered the ball past Binnie.

Temple was booked for simulation just before the half hour mark and he was denied by Binnie just before Wroxham retook the lead.

Ryan John put Gray through on goal and the young striker rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net at the Skinners Lane end for his first Wroxham goal.

With the home side leading 2-1 at the break, Kieran Money and Batch entered the field for the second half in place of Shaun Taylor and Alfie Bell.

Gray failed to trouble the keeper with a shot from the inside the penalty area after a hour and within sixty seconds, Johnson fired a cross across the box which evaded everyone.
Binnie made a great save to deny Temple and Gray fired wide before Buckhurst Hill levelled for a second time.

There were 73 minutes on the clock when an audacious lob from Ollie Fernandez ended up in the back of the net following a corner.

On two occasions, the away side came to close to winning the game. Five minutes after the equaliser, Arthur Massingham saw his effort tipped on to the post by Binnie and with minutes remaining, Max Gnandi hit the bar.

Four minutes of injury time came and went and when referee, Dario Matthewson brought the game to and end, the 143 in attendance waited for the penalty shoot-out.

With the scores level at 4-4 after five spot kicks each, the shoot-out went to sudden death.

After a total of 14 penalties each and the scores at 10-10, Jordan King saw his attempt clear the cross bar and Temple steadied himself to score and send the visitors into the Second Round.
