On Grand National day, the Yachtsmen made sure of a victory on the line when Chris Skipper poked home the winner in the 93rd minute to send Trafford Park into raptures.
It had seemed like the win would be out of reach as lowly Haverhill Rovers put up plenty of fight and to the casual observer may have deserved more than a point that it looked like they would be earning in the 92nd minute. Ollie Sutton in the Wroxham goal had pulled off a number of smart saves to keep the home side in the game. The Rovers hope for a point though was crushed in the 93rd minute when Skipper who had been called forward to add height to the Wroxham attack found himself free in the area. As it turned out, it was his feet that put the ball past James Philp in the visitors goal.
The game started with Wroxham playing their usual passing football and after some neat interplay between Brad Spooner, Shaun Taylor and Matty Hayden, the latter was able to turn and shoot. The Rovers keeper was equal to the shot and the chance gone.
After 12 minutes, there was a controversial incident midway in the Haverhill half. Ryan Miles and Kyan Gulliver tussled and whilst on the ground, it appeared that Gulliver stamped on Miles. The referee's Assistant was not far from the incident but he said there was not a stamp and the game continued with all 22 players.
Wroxham were looking the likely side to break the deadlock and midway through the half, that was the case. Wroxham had 2 chances to get the ball past Philp but he made good stops until Callum Olpin received the ball from the second save and made no mistake from inside the six-yard box.
The goal spurred the visitors into life and Jake Banyard had an excellent chance from a ball headed back to him at the edge of the area but his shot was high and into the woods at the Norwich end.
Just before half-time, Banyard was able to get a dangerous cross into the Wroxham area but Joe Keeley was on hand to clear the danger.
Haverhill came out in the second half in determined fashion feeling aggrieved with some of referee Richard Owen's decisions in the opening 45 minutes. Frederick King was the first to have sight of the Wroxham goal from the edge of the area but Sutton was equal to it.
Brad Spooner had an opportunity from 25 yards within a minute but Philp made the save low to his right.
Ten minutes into the half, Joe Keeley found his name taken by the referee for a foul although it appeared that the referee wasn't going to blow up until the Rovers player had screamed out. Thankfully, it was not as serious an injury as the reaction sounded.
On the hour, the visitors drew level. Ollie Yun clashed with Banyard on the edge of the penalty area. From the resulting Gulliver free kick, Sutton was only able to push the ball into the net as he dived to his left.
The goal gave Rovers hope and they pushed forward looking for a second goal. A bullet header from King was pushed over by Sutton and Banyard was able to get a shot from inside the area and again Sutton saved.
The pressure on the Wroxham defence prompted Jordan Southgate to make some changes and Olpin and Hayden were replaced by Jamie Forshaw and Alex Brasero for the last 20 minutes.
Wroxham were trying to get the winner and Ryan Miles was just wide of the left post after picking up the ball in midfield and advancing towards goal. Brad Spooner was avble to beat the offside but he wasn't able to get a clear shot at goal so played it back to Shaun Taylor but his attempt was blocked by a defender.
With Keeley on a yellow card, Southgate brought on Conley Poynter who would be looking to give more width to the Wroxham attack.
On 81 minutes, the Rovers showed that they were not going to settle for a draw and Joe Morris nicked the ball past Sutton but Ollie Yun was able to get back and calmly clear the danger.
As the game went into additional time, it was looking like 'Do or Die' for the Yachtsmen. Skipper was pushed up into the attack and it was from this, the winner came. Wroxham were awarded a free kick on the right and as the ball came into the area, it looked like Skipper had been fouled as he went to head the ball. Shaun Taylor went to collect the loose ball and his cross towards the six yard box found Skipper unmarked. The defender was able to collect his feet and poked the ball past Philp to send Trafford Park into joy! With little time remaining on the clock, the Yachtsmen were able to see out the final moments of the game and maintain their push for the League title.
