Depleted Yachtswomen suffer narrow defeat

Richard Giles4 May - 19:43

In their final game of the season the Yachtswomen were defeated 2-1 at second placed Royston Town

Due to injuries and holidays Wroxham travelled to Royston with a bare eleven players which included two goalkeepers.

As expected the hosts had all the early pressure forcing Wroxham to defend deeply but the defence was standing firm and the Yachtswomen were quick on counter-attacks.

Bryony Williams pulled off a couple of excellent saves to keep the score goalless before the deadlock was broken on 35 minutes from the penalty spot after a Royston striker was brought down. Williams got a hand to the penalty, but it crept over the line, as the hosts took a slender 1-0 at the break.

Ten minutes into the second half, a clear foul on Hayley Kindred was awarded to Royston and from the freekick Wroxham cleared the ball for a corner only for the referee to awarded a penalty for an unknown reason which saw the Yachtswomen reduced to 10 players via a sin bin, with Royston doubling their lead.

Despite this reverse, Wroxham battle all over the pitch and themselves were awarded a penalty eight minutes from time which was converted by Ella Gambell. They also had a couple of appeals for handball in the area ignored by the very inconsistent referee.

Unfortunately, Wroxham could not force an equaliser, but praise must go to all eleven players who left everything on the pitch and fought for each other throughout the game
