By the time Wroxham take to the field again, next Saturday, we will be in the second half of October. Sitting third in the league after this latest win, and “a good start to the season” maybe now needs to be classed as “this is how things are”.
Jordan Southgate and his staff have done an incredible job with the number of injuries they have had to deal with. As an example, we are 12 games into the Isthmian League season, and four different goalkeepers have stood between the sticks – including Ryan Hawkins at Hashtag United.
Of course, the players more than deserve the praise too. Lads have stepped up from the reserves and made real impacts, helped along by experienced step four operators. Everyone has played their part and only once has an unchanged line up been named and there were enforced changes in personnel for the visit of sixth placed Concord Rangers.
Captain Jordan King was unavailable, as was Kieran Money who suffered an injury in midweek and the welcome returns of Adam Crookes and Sammy Johnson were timely. Luke Holt returned in goal and Lucas Densley was back in the side.
Concord arrived in Norfolk, on the back of a 3-2 midweek defeat at Redbridge, looking to return to winning ways and cement their place in the top six.
It wasn’t until the 20th minute that the first real chance of the game was created. Ben Lewis drove to the bye line, and his cross was volleyed goal wards by Hawkins who could only watch ‘keeper Charlie Brown push the ball away for a corner.
However, within four minutes, Wroxham were 2-0 up courtesy of two strikes from Densley. His first was a superb solo goal. Picking the ball up five yards inside his own half, he powered towards the Concord penalty area and created himself the space to curl a wonderful effort into the bottom corner of Brown’s goal.
Two minutes later he grabbed another with a fine shot across the keeper after being put through in a central position.
Just after half an hour, it was almost three. Johnson was pulled back by Concord’s Makhaya James, who was booked, and Hawkins’ free kick landed on the roof of Brown’s net.
Holt was not troubled by a header that cleared his cross bar and Densley, in search of a third, shot wide from the edge of the box before referee Samuel Gasson-Cox brought the first half to an end.
The second half was seven minutes old when Concord pulled a goal back through Kai Udofot-torres but the Yachtsmen’s two goal lead was restored within three minutes.
Densley was set free down the left and after cutting inside and pulling the ball back, Johnson was there to score his fifth league goal of the season with an excellent finish.
There was little else in the way of real chances and with Wroxham looking comfortable, Southgate used all five of his subs as his side secured its second win in a week.
Next up is a trip to Bowers & Pitsea next Saturday.
