Densley at the Double

Paul Jeater

Wroxham 4 Felixstowe & Walton United 0

Last season, against the Seasiders, Wroxham suffered 2-0 defeats in both games, despite putting in excellent performances home and away.
The fixture on Tuesday night looked a tough one, the visitors are highly fancied to be battling for promotion at the business end of the campaign and Jordan Southgate was robbed of key personnel heading into the match.
Adam Crookes was ruled out due to the freak injury he suffered at Takeley and with Gabe Overton, Billy Batch and Asa McGeachy injured and Sammy Johnson unavailable, the manager handed a first Isthmian League start to Lucas Densley. Jordan King returned to the starting line up to captain the side.
Alfie Lees and Benji Hopcroft were called into a first team league match day squad for the first time, and they were amongst the five substitutes.
Wroxham deserved more from Takeley last Saturday and the home side were quick out of the blocks when Ryan Hawkins rolled an effort wide after just three minutes.
It didn’t take long for the Yachtsmen to take the lead. There were ten minutes on the clock when Josh Hazell put a teasing ball into the box which ended up in the back of the net. Hazell and Flack both claimed the goal and some even thought it was an own goal.
The visitors slowly started to get a foot in the game and Wroxham were under some intense pressure for the next 15 to 20 minutes. Tom Coombe made a spectacular diving save (one for the cameras) and watched a couple of efforts flash wide, whilst in front of him, Ben Lewis, Jordan King and Hazell stood firm.
Hawkins went close with a free kick on 23 minutes and soon after Kieran Money found himself in the book, Wroxham doubled their advantage when a persistent Lucas Densley capitalised on a defensive mistake to slide the ball into the net for his first senior goal.
Just before the break, Densley and Hawkins linked up well but the later saw his effort go wide of the post.
A 2-0 scoreline is always cagey but after 58 minutes, Wroxham gave themselves the security of a third goal.
The ball was played across the middle of the park, by the excellent Kieran Money, to Josh Hazell who stepped forward and hammered an unstoppable shot, from 35 yards, past the visiting ‘keeper, Harry Wright. A serious goal of the season contender.
Six minutes later, Hawkins and Densley combined again and the young forward scored his second of the night, curling a superb effort into the far corner.
Southgate rang the changes at various times, giving the lads on the bench valuable minutes. Harry Sparrow replaced Flack, Charlie Moore came on for Ryan John, Lucas Poll entered the fray in place of Alfie Bell, who had an excellent night, and young Alfie Lees exchanged places with man of the match, Densley.
Four minutes of injury time was seen out and the vast majority of the 265 in attendance stood to applaud the lads off the field.
Every player had played their part and after a few weeks of bad luck and adversity, the season is truly up and running with Walthamstow visiting The Ginger Pickle Arena on Saturday.
