Wroxham 1 Norwich City Under 21s 4

Sunday afternoon in early May, and more than 800 travelled to Carrow Road for the Norfolk Senior Cup Final. Wroxham played a Norwich City Under 21 side, made up of young, full time, professional footballers, some likely to be destined for full time careers in the game.

The bulk of the crowd favoured the Yachtsmen, led by the Blue Wave, they sang throughout the game. If Norwich City had marketed the game to their supporters it had little impact.

The Yachtsmen started the game the brighter of the two teams and went ahead on 12 minutes . Good interplay down the left by Travis Dodsworth and Shaun Taylor led to Taylor finding Asa McGeachy inside the Norwich penalty area and the Wroxham striker made no mistake as his low shot nestled into the corner of the Canaries net.

The scoreboard read, Wroxham 1 Norwich City 0 and that remained the score line until the 25th minute. A challenge by a Norwich City player went unpunished, and that appeared to lead to hesitation in the defence. Norwich capitalised and the Canaries striker rounded the stranded Wroxham keeper, George Potter, and fired into an empty net.

At half time the Yachtsmen could be pleased with their performance. The Norwich City team appeared to change tactics in the second half, and adopted a more direct approach. Two goals in two minutes just before the hour mark, effectively took the game beyond Wroxham.

Jordan Southgate brought striker Ryan Hawkins on the hour, on minutes later Asa McGeachy fashioned a good chance but was crowded out by Norwich defenders.

In the 70th minute Norwich scored their 4th goal in somewhat controversial manner with a Norwich player standing in the six yard box directly adjacent to the Wroxham keeper as the ball entered the net, yet deemed not to be affecting or distracting him. No official saw this an offside offence and the goal stood.

Wroxham used all their substitutes in the remaining minutes. In the 83 minute, a poignant moment as Craig Parker was replaced by Harry Sparrow. Parker had announced his retirement as a player over the weekend, he applauded the supporters as he left the pitch for the last time.

At the final whistle Wroxham supporters cheered their players who had given everything. Not surprisingly after the game, many asked why the Norfolk County FA had invited a club with young professional players into a competition primarily designed for non- league clubs. On the day ,however, Norwich City were too strong and fully deserved their victory.
