Wroxham 1 Downham Town 2 (Norfolk Senior Cup Quarter Final)

Wroxham crashed out of the Norfolk Senior Cup last night after a lack lustre second half performance against Thurlow Nunn League,Downham Town.

There were few chances in the opening half. In the 19th minute Wroxham striker Ryan Miles was upended twenty yards from goal, the resulting free kick saw Harley Black scrape the top of the cross bar . However five minutes later Wroxham went ahead. Miles and Travis Dodsworth interchanged passes on the left and Dodsworth’s cross was only parried by the visitors keeper, allowing Shaun Taylor to strike a firm , low shot into the Downham net.

Wroxham went into the changing rooms with a 1-0 lead and looked comfortable. The second half was a different affair. In difficult conditions with driving rain and a swirling wind, the away side adapted quicker and began to threaten. Half way through the half a mix up in the Wroxham defence led to an equaliser.

Momentum now shifted, and the Thurlow Nunn side sensed a cup upset could be on the cards. Meanwhile Wroxham began to throw players forward in the hope of snatching a late winner. In doing so they left themselves vulnerable to being caught on the break, and so it was that in the 88th minute Downham striker Fletcher Toll found himself one on one with Ollie Sutton in the Wroxham goal. He kept his nerve and slotted the ball into the Wroxham net.

The referee indicated there would be five additional minutes, but in truth the Yachtsmen created little in the additional time, and at the final whistle it was Downham who progress to the semi final where they will meet Watton United in April.

For Wroxham, 48 hours is a long time in football.. on Tuesday , a young side, fielding 5 reserves, held play off hopefuls, Heybridge Swifts to a goalless draw. On Thursday a side with far more experience failed to get into gear against a Downham side who clearly saw & took their chance to administer a cup upset.

With less than 48 hours till the next game , away to Ipswich Wanderers, manager Jordan Southgate must be wondering who to start there, given that on Easter Monday, there is a Norfolk derby when the Yachtsmen welcome Gorleston to Trafford Park , kick off 3pm.
